South Bend Fourteen Lathe Drive Belts

Mark R. Jonkman

The south bend fourteen doesn’t use flat belts. It has a Reeves drive for variable speed and a main drive belt that I believe is like a timing belt on mine.

Completely different beast then 9,10 or 14.5” lathes.

Anyone with experience on swapping these belts? I have done my own Clausing Lathe and Bridgeport Mill. I couldn't find anything on YouTube for the South Bend Fourteen belts. I know I will have to remove a pulley to get the belt on/off. What else should get inspected? My Clausing has fiber bushings in the pullies, I will check them. Drive isn't making noise, so I expect they are OK. Mostly looking for the "gotcha" items, i.e. special tools, hidden setscrews, etc.

Thank you for your help.
It is dual V-belt.
Ted says he has them and also provided cross reference to current parts.
We may get my friend's lathe fixed.
Having a lot of slip in high torque operations, i.e. drilling large holes, etc.
Tried retensioning the belts, but no real improvement. I suspect the problem is the Vari-Drive belt, rather than the spindle belts.
The original owner says they have never been replaced.
Either way, we will scuff up the pulleys, replace the belts, retension and giv'er a go..

Well, I may have looked at the wrong part number.
I show the timing belt as PT4456TT1, but I believe that is the single drive belt on the post Nov 1974 up.
I don’t show the number you listed, does it have dual drive belts?
I looked in the older parts list, and the AC dual drive belts match the number you list, starting at about SN 73TT876.
That belt is 66.93-inches.

Hi Derrick,
If anyone might have them it would be Ted…
The part numbers you list are for a November 1974 forward, starting about SN 74TT1260.
The variable speed belt is a Speed Selector Inc. belt # 2322V421
This belt is still listed in their belt catalog, but not sure with out calling.
I believe the variable speed belt is the same as the older 14’s before the above date.
The timing belt is a Browning 660H100
The timing belt is not the same as the older belt.
You should be able to cross the 660H100, I see them listed from 13.00 to 106.00
That belt is 66-inchs x 1-inch
I don’t know the length of the VSD belt, only that it is 10.5-inchs center to center.
The Speed Selector price list as of 4/22 lists the belt at 54.00.

Hope that helps,

Steve

Steve

Do you have the original belts? Can you take measurements off them and look them up from there? I have a south bend fourteen though right now it’s in my son’s shop about 20 miles away. If you need measurements and ain’t in a hurry I might be able to measure them.

I’ve never needed to change the belts on my FOURTEEN. I’ve checked them over the years, and I hesitate to remove them. But this company sells varidrive belts.

Tracking that; Hoping for easier answer, like someone knows the Part #'s. Prepared to dismount and take to Bearing, Belt & Chain Store for matchup.

I'm just guessin but I kinda think the stock of these belts has been depleted . I went to a fabric store years back & bought a couple of the fabric tape measures that seamstresses use
just for measuring pulley to pulley & weird shapes like a motorcycle fender of gas tank .  They come in handy for all sorts of things   .
