How do I determine belt length?

I have a 14 1/2" swing South Bend lathe. I did a lot of work early this week and the cone pulley belt started doing a lot of slipping. It now works fine, maybe it got warm and expanded?
The adjusting screw is at its limit. I definitely should get a new belt. How do I figure out how long a belt to order? Steve |

theres a pulley calculator on line that you can use ,
just google it . or for future reference go to a fabric store
& buy one of the nice tape measures they sell . the one I have

Steve, as follows, remove the belt, measure it, order some belt material plus a six inches, order the alligator clips with the belt, enjoy.
make sure you take the adjustment back to the starting point before you measure and cut the new belt, you need your thinking cap on but it’s not too difficult. I’ve done a few, I’ve laced one, alligator clipped a couple, and glued one, all work fine, gluing is best but more fiddly with the scarf joint made with a 5inch grinder, works fine. stuart |

If the belt is in good shape and it's not an inside the cabinet style, I'd make a longer adjustment screw. Is it the turnbuckle style ? Make a longer piece for the right hand thread part. Steve, as follows, remove the belt, measure it, order some belt material plus a six inches, order the alligator clips with the belt, enjoy. |

The measurement is just the length around the pulleys, with the adjustment set back toward minimum? There isn't any extra stretch factor or something?

For link belt I would allow a LITTLE bit of stretch for inital settlement. Link belt only applies to V belt, not flat, and you haven't said which you have. You can't apply an endless belt to an underdrive, as the headstock casting has to pass through it and just won't on an endless. Bear in mind that you have to be able to de-tension enough with the lever to be able to shift the belt across. If your existing belt is in good enough condition apart from being a bit long, and is either a link or flat belt you could just shorten it to save buying new. Eddie

Cone pulley tells me flat belt. How wide is it, I’m guessing 2”? I find these to be excellent and not expensive. Installs in minutes, can be removed and reused if you need to disassemble the lathe in the future.

Go to Ilion Industrial on eBay. Steve W sells belts and other stuff for SB lathes and tells how to measure for a scarfed belt. Other good stuff like wick kits and rebuild books and the correct lubricants too.

I thought there might be some extra allowance. I measured the length around the pulleys with the adjuster set about 25% away from the shortest position, with the engage lever in tension position. This came to 65" x 2". I ordered a belt from Rick's ebay source (thanks Rick!).

For future reference, the belt on my SB13, with 3 step cone pulley, is 62 1/2”.
