Carbide Use?

Hey Guys,

How are these used (see photo)?  Do they need to be sharpened?  Is there a specific holder for them?  Any use for my SB9c?

Thanks,

Greg

Howdy,

Those appear to be braze-in inserts.  A slot is cut in a steel bar and the insert is brazed in generally using bronze foil, then it is sharpened with silicon carbide and diamond grinding wheels.
They might be good for roughing scaly steels.

Enjoy,

OK

They could be also from a face mill that has replaceable inserts

But, in use, don't get them so hot that the braze melts! (Voice of experience.)

If you want to do a cheap test to see how you like them, harbor freight sells a set for just a few bucks. If you don't like them, toss them in the trash with minimal regrets:

Thanks for all of the input, but....................

I was hoping for some direction, and potential instructions on what has to be done to use the Unground Carbide pieces i have in hand, and pictured below.  Can they be efficiently used as is?  Are they of more use to the educated machinist who has a much larger lathe than my SB9c?

Thanks again as always for he insight!

Hello,

The foil is like thin shim stock, less than 0.010" thick, cut to the bottom and edge shapes that contact the pocket.  Brass can be used too.
Everything should be cleaned like for any other type of soldering/brazing.  Once the bronze/brass melts, it´s good idea to make sure the insert is seated using a piece of wood.

Enjoy,

The other thing to remember is the tool needs held more flat not at the angle of the common lantern tool post holder.  As shown in the attached  old advertisement.

i might mention that most inexpensive brazed carbide tools are also poorly done.  they can be be ground with a diamond wheel to be pretty useful ...  especially for roughing and for some interrupted cuts, which are hard on normal carbide.   btw, diamond wheels can be pretty inexpensive lately.

also our production shop made many parts using excellent Hardinge brazed carbide tools.  AHC, HNC, HC .  3/8 shank .  worked out of the box.

Mine too, back when they were the only tools I could find. I did discover that alox grinding wheels would work, but SiC (silicon carbide) or "green wheels" are supposed to work better.

Howdy,

You won't be able to use TC tooling to its full potential on a flat belt driven lathe, but it comes in handy.  I've used it on my relic to turn off seized bearing races and hard chroming from shafts.
The big radius on some of your inserts goes into a two-sided pocket, and used for roughing.  The radius is a common fractional size so end milling is easy.
The plain inserts are generally for a one-sided pocket and are used for form tools.
What angles you make your pockets for rake depends on the purpose.  Negative angles are for general steel; zero for form tools and brittle materials like cast iron and some brasses; and positive angles for sheering stainless steel, aluminium, titanium.

have to mention another good use for carbide tools ... cutting down shanks on  HSS drill bits that are too large to go into the tailstock chuck ... with carbide you don't have to worry about how hard the shanks might be.

of course, you can't go too far overboard with this idea ... about twice chuck capacity you should go to a boring bar anyway.

Thanks a bunch for the insight.  If I do come across some silver brazing and black flux, and a hot enough torch, I may give them a try.  I assume that some type of a cutting edge needs to be formed after they are brazed into a holder.

Thanks again, and have a great weekend!
