stuck tailstock screw

The tailstock screw on my 1956 10L will turn in neither direction.  I've soaked it with penetrant to no avail.  Before I attempt the brute force method, does anyone have any suggestions?

Fortunately there is a better penetrating oil than Kroil and it is a home brew very much cheaer.

Great…

1- how do you get the two to stay mixed?

2- What happens when the acetone evaporates in 2 minutes?

3- Which ATF do you use?

I have tried this mix and all I got was a mess.

They mix just fine, use the old type of Dextron not the new or Mercon if you have a ford.
The acetone is the creeper for the fluid. keep it in a jar with the lid on, if it thickens add a little more acetone.

When I go to my local ACE hardware,
how will I know old from new Dextron?

Neil Butterfield <neilbfield@...>

To keep mixed and prevent evaporation store the 50/50 mix in metal can and pinch the sides in as you tighten the metal cap causing a slight vacuum in the can. You can then store for quite a while.

I’m no authority on ATF but I’m sure any will work???

I was remiss in not mentioning the source of the article. It was one of the Village Press magazines. Home Shop Machinist I believe.

Lance,

Original dextron(1968) contained whale oil, it was reformulated three more times up to dextron 3, which is what you want to use. Dextron 6 has a lower viscosity and contains components that reduce the ability of the fluid to thin out beyond a Set viscosity.
