I have cut a number of #2 and #3MT's using just the compound. They
have always worked just fine. However, my Dad always told me that it
is better to be lucky than skilfull.

Here is another idea. Find a junk #3MT drill, cut off the shank and
use the taper for your adaptor. You may be able to find a bad #3MT
drill for free from your local machine shop. The shank of the drill
can be easily cut with a HSS hacksaw while the drill is turning in the
lathe.

Only the flutes are hardened.
