i might mention that most inexpensive brazed carbide tools are also poorly done. they can be be ground with a diamond wheel to be pretty useful ... especially for roughing and for some interrupted cut

... you can check your home-made gear by using a known good gear of the same dp and angle... calculate the theoretical pitch diameters ( book numbers ) of each gear and make a little jig with center p

sb 13 compound angle markings.
oh no !! .. i needed to grind a 1.5 degree angle on a form boring bar ... so i set my trusty compound angle to 1.5 degrees and dialed the compound past a dial indicator an inch ... great, 0.012 taper

TPI discrepancy
if the upper spindle gear is supposed to be 20 instead of 40 ..... the thread pitch would be off by 2 - 1 , not 13 per cent. and a 9-pitch lead screw could only cut a few useful threads. interesting.

on my 13 incher, i use black chain oil on my gears and gear shafts ... it sticks ...and contains moly, for extra lube. the moly embeds in the metal and is not a bad dry lube all by itself. i even spra

don't they still make a small chuck that has a 5c shank ? i think they were about a 4 or 5 inch chuck, but might work for reverse threading, other light jobs.

Machining A Pointed Shaft To Length
remember that 1/8 stock probably won't go into a 1/8 ball bearing. heh, don't ask me how i know. 5c collets take internal threaded stops ... kind of a nut with a long bolt, could easily make in-shop.
