Mystery Screw
I have an original chip guard for my 13", got it from Ted (SB Lathe Man). The ends are flat and they scrap the chips away. With the ends bent up, it will ride over the chips and allow them to drop in

When it comes to pulling the spindle, the bull gear is lightly press fitted. Do not beat the spindle out with a hammer, use a screw setup to jack the spindle out of the gear and bearing bores... John

Compound and cross slide handle nut
The only left hand threads on a South Bend that I know (other than ACME lead screws) is the screw in the power feed 'star' wheel. The compound and cross slide handles are right handed. John
