Years ago I sold my South Bend 9A. When the prospective customer turned it on, the switch arced and smoked a bit, and blew the breaker. Not good timing. :-)

I would make the pad wide (deep?) enough to support the lathe and you as the operator. You would feel less of the movement. BTW: Have you measured the problem? Is it really evident or does it just bug

Look in the front of the manual. There is a drawing of the head stock with the back gear assembly along with a description on how to adjust the set screw. I have had to do it on two different lathes.
