Carbide Use?
The other thing to remember is the tool needs held more flat not at the angle of the common lantern tool post holder. As shown in the attached old advertisement.

If you were poor and a good fabricator/machinist you used a car tranny. If you had excess cash flow you used one of these or one from numerous other manufacturers. When you no longer had a line shaft.

Heavy 10 Single Tumbler Gearbox - Want to Buy
Eddie, you are asking questions from 30 years ago. Settings and wire were the same as I was using for mild steel, it was a standard co2/argon mix (I did increase the flow but it might not be required)

I know it is not common excepted practice, but I used to turn up the argon/mix on my Mig and welded cast all the time without failure of the welds. I did weld some broken castings from a 24 inch X 12

John do your original 1/2" measure the full 1/2" or are they like my 5/8" a bit smaller? If so what does the groove in your holder measure for height?

Looking online I find no suppliers of 7/16" but lots of 1/2". With the manufactures listing the product as using 1/2" also makes it seem as something is afoul here.

First Cut
My thoughts cutter ground wrong and above center. Also looks like using 1/2 nut instead of clutch for feed. Not a pro but my guesses.
