OT-places to visit in Chicago
The Museum of Science and Industery is a must see (plan a full day). The Feild Museum is also interesting. Both are World Class Museums.

Steve That is correct mine is not a brake lathe, but seems to be about the same vintage. It is like this lathe in these pictures. More pictures at: http://www.andersonofrosholt.com/3.html

Nice to see another lathe of the same vintage as my 24 1/2" X 144". I have the 2 square legs but also a center support leg due to the 144" bed. The silent drive is also on mine, but I have a quick cha

Southbend 13 inch, new member
I also agree. I started with a 9" X 36" SB and there was always something that was to big for it. After buying a 24" X 12' SB I never had that problem again. If you have the floor space for the lathe

Vintage lathe Olympia WA Craig's list
When I read it yesterday in the description it had South bend and an $850 price. In the title I think it had $650. Now it is $450? Looks like the price is going down. RM

protecting the ways from the chuck
Since my chuck weighs close to 100 pounds on my 24" SB, I place the chuck on a wooden holder. Then I rotate the spindle instead of the chuck to install or remove it. The wooden holder protects the way

Introducing myself and my lathes [6 Attachments]
Welcome to the group. The last time I moved my 24" X 144" SB it was only a few of miles, so I just put an axle under the chip pan & bolted on a tongue to pull it. I left the tires on the axle 1/2 flat

To Powdercoat or Not to Powdercoat...is that a question?
Very well stated. The ability of the machinist determines the quality of the work produced much more than the shine on the lathe.

Thats a great deal Paul is it the leatherette edition? Speaking of books I would rather have the book Steve and Turk could write even at 100 bucks.

I thought the "code names" were interesting. In the 1918 catalog all the models have a factory code word. I have a "Polly". Catalog link bellow page 25. http://www.wewilliams.net/docs/Catalog%2055%20-

Painting a Lathe
Sound advice for basic painting. One big advantage of an oil based paint is if you don't get all the lubricating oil cleaned off the machine the paint still has 1/2 a chance of sticking. My old lathe

Oil, Way, No. 2 or No. 4?????
Be careful with automotive transmission greases. Some contain chemicals that eat brass or bronze. The rule of thumb I was told is if it says EP don't use it if there is brass/bronze. If is is labeled
