Re: stuck chuck
Clean the internal threads on the chuck, external threads on the spindle, and lightly lube it every time you remove the chuck, AND every time you reinstall it, cross everything you can cross, and pray

Re: stuck chuck
Is there anything that can be done to prevent a chuck from sticking?
Other than not socking it tightly to begin with.
Maybe some sort of shim, maybe Teflon, a few thou thick, if it is rigid enough

One big point for the MLA kit is that the ID is much much bigger than any commercial unit.

If you plan on machining steady rest bases, your depth of cut for the V is about 1/4”. I just checked my tailstock way template I used in order to re condition SB 9A and 10K.

Very interesting. I've had an idea rumbling around in my head to do the initial thinking about a "universal" steady rest that seats on a brand & size specific mount. One steady rest and multiple

9A Bed Profile
FWIW, and consider this just a suggestion , I have made an 9” Workshop MLA steady and a 1/2 dozen dial indicators for both the 9” and the Heavy 10.
In both projects I only used a single 90o VEE.

Some caliper measurements for you. It's difficult to measure the ways on the end as they run to the side. So from my sketch you'll add up all the features and it doesn't agree with the full width of

Re: stuck chuck
There are so many variants of these lathes that I'm sure as pointed out this method won't work on every one. On this one there is a big cast lug on the bull gear opposite the locking pin. I imagine it

Well, here's one more. I didn't like the idea of stressing the jaws by using them as a pressure point, and, anything that involves the backgears was a non-starter. I finally found two strap wrenches

Is the shaft square in that area, or do you get leverage off the pin? I am trying to figure out how it works.

Newb here, first post.
Mine was stuck when I got it due to sitting for 20+ years and yes I broke a tooth on the back gear.
Make one of these from 1/4 thick plate then put it on the bull gear opposite
