Heavy 10 lathe light
I have my 1966 heavy 10 running with the VFD and after a few shake down cruise issues I think it may make chips. But I need a light on it and would like to have look some what original. are there any

Greetings
I am the proud owner of a 16 x 60 SB lathe. Have actually owned it for a couple of years, but recently got it home. Phase converter going and the lathe is pretty smooth. Will be working on the belt

Re: Broken quick change gearbox
The shaft has to rotate. There's a groove around the end of the shaft where the retainer pin goes, which is why it's offset.

If you are using the low speed set up check the gears for a metal chip in the gears

I had this happen recently. Spindle bearings are the last thing you want to mess with. My fix was to back off on the nut (slightly) that controls spindle lateral movement. I then got some light

This may sound stupid and obvious, but first make sure that you don't have the gear train engaged and a chip jammed in the spindle gear.

model 644 A ser # 167660 Spindle developed slight bind in one quaqdrant of rotation.
I was working with my lathe and the other day while indicating in some round stock noticed that the spindle was starting to bind in approximately 1/4 of it's rotation. This occurs in the same section

Re: Broken quick change gearbox
The tumbler shaft should rotate freely. You probably have a bad spot in your tumbler idler gear(or dirt/chip in a tooth or two)

Re: Broken quick change gearbox
Thanks Allen on my machine one of the holes is much smaller that is why I thought it is a tapered pin but I guess it could just be mushroomed over on that side. So should that shaft that the tumblers

Re: Broken quick change gearbox
yes- the pin is offset because it rides in a groove in the side of the shaft. in both of my machines, the pin is straight, and came out easily.

Re: Broken quick change gearbox
Hi does anyone know if the tumbler shaft should rotate? I would think my pin is broken I can't see how if the pin was intact that the tumbler shaft would be able to rotate. Also does it make sense

I forgot to put the price in my last post.
Did you buy it??
I not too far from Reading but really don't need another lathe.

Re: Anyone try a Shars fully machined backing plate and chuck?
That's what I used fitting a 7" 4-jaw to a backplate. Harbor Freight caliper only read to the nearest half-thousandth. Got it to a nice mallet tap fit onto the chuck, then I used a transfer punch

It's a 6808 zz or rs. 7mm width. I needed to shim the bore because 40mm is a bit too large, but the next standard size is too small. It was less than $10 delivered from

A good practice is leaving the idler gear "just tight enough" so in case of a crash or other disaster, the gear will push itself out of mesh.
