Re: cross feed and compound screw question
They're normal V thread, not ACME. Makes it much simpler to cut the left hand thread for the compound slide screw.
Nothing stopping you from changing the cross and compound slides to ACME if you

Re: cross feed and compound screw question
Mr Wells has written on the splicing of an acme thread into the cross feed and at one time sold the threaded stock for around $15.00. A series of slides is available describing the effort. For the 9"

cross feed and compound screw question
I have the apron and saddle torn down for cleaning/ repair/ paint, and noticed the feed screw threads are worn to the point of being sharp towards the center of travel.
What was the original cross

POTD - well it took a bit longer than a day...
Not sure if folks are still posting projects and this is actually a wood project but is for my lathe bench and I am pretty happy with it. I made it from scraps around the shop while trying to clean up

Re: fourteen
Interesting question.
The 14", 17", and 20" South Bends, made in South Bend, had 2 Vees and 2 flats.
The "Turnados" made in Taiwan, had(have) 3 Vees and 1 flat.

Did they in all case retain the 3 v 1 flat way bed as sort of a nod to South Bend heritage?

The "TURNADO" was originally the model name of the 17" and 20" geared head lathes made in South Bend. When the new owner in '93 started buying machines from Taiwan, he used that name for those

Re: fourteen
Yes, TT designates the 14" variable speed machine.
I can't answer the question about the change in serial numbers ?? I wasn't involved with that in the 70's, and can't think of a reason to do that.

The 14" Variable speed lathe was made in South Bend.
The first 2 numbers of the serial number is the year it was made. This one must have been in someone's stock for awhile or it was not the original

Yup! 13" Sears Expert, made by an "old, reliable" manufacturer, South Bend, which was all of 8 years old at the time.

Re: 1914 lathe
Yes, SBL 11 inch with 5 foot bed, #1904, probably made in 1912. Other than a boogered up carriage hand wheel, it's in really nice condition.
Richard
According to my data base. Mark
