Re: SB Mill FS Hollister CA
I thought I read somewhere that they used the gearbox from one of the lathes . I always thought that gear box was a pretty slick idea .

Re: SB Mill FS Hollister CA
Looks a little bigger than mine, which is a lot cleaner, with a 3/4hp 3 phase motor on it. I think mine is a MIL4212. Am thinking of selling it. No gear box, I think they crashed it at some point

Re: SB Mill FS Hollister CA
That does look like a ton of extras. Almost a free mill if you buy the tooling. If I got a South Bend mill I want one that has the quick change gear box for feeds.

Re: Minimum Number of Change Gears
I have that set from Ebay. I have had occasion to cut metric threads twice with them. They worked fine. There are some shims to allow you to line up the gears but found them insufficient and made some

Re: Minimum Number of Change Gears
You might want to consider joining this group and take a look at how simple it is to add a stepper motor+driver and a 1 pulse per rev sensor to get all the threads you want. It was for old lathes

Re: Minimum Number of Change Gears
Make a light pass with a sharp tool & then measure with a thread gauge to see what your setup for now . If your lathe is like most lathes ( we don't know what lathe you have ) there

Re: Minimum Number of Change Gears
I've now found Colchester's patented list of metric gearing for an Imperial leadscrew in Model Engineer, letters section, 6 - 19 April, 1979. It is listed like this:
6 (headstock mandrel)

To any of our group members, looking for a small (but not inexpensive) surface grinder, you may want to look at the JET version. After buying and quickly selling off two larger machines that I would

Re: Minimum Number of Change Gears
My thoughts...
0) Unless you aren't going to have ongoing use of the printer you don't have to print them all up front.
1) Start by printing the gears for TPIs

Re: Minimum Number of Change Gears
You might find some useful info here, I have this gear set, they appear well finished, but honestly I have not used them to date.

Re: Minimum Number of Change Gears
Just talking about Imperial tpis: Consider whether you might want to cut 19tpi, which gets you 3/8" BSP threads, and isn't on the gearbox range of the standard 14.5" SB we have (NPT is not

Re: Minimum Number of Change Gears
Fair enough, thanks for the reply, I just hoped there was some magic number the covered most bases.
I'm also terrible with imperial threads being a child of the metric system, maybe I should just work

Re: Minimum Number of Change Gears
Change gears don’t care about diameter- they care about threads per inch and feed rates. If you only want the thread pitches listed you could use the change gear chart to determine which gears you

Minimum Number of Change Gears
Hi all,
Quick opinion question.
I'm 3D printing a set of change gears as a bit of an experiment, the cost is low but its quite a bit of time to invest
I know very little about actually using change

Re: New to me SB 10 Heavy, need help with identification
If you have any small or moderate sized privately owned machine shops nearby, you may want to stop in and inquire. An awful lot of these grinders were sold to small startup machine shops

Re: New to me SB 10 Heavy, need help with identification
I bought direct from Bergerda. Shipping was an arm and a leg since they would only use FedEx. Even with shipping it was cheaper than EBAY.
Here's one of the HP_UHU
