Leather belts are not to be glued, they stretch to much and have to be shortened before they are worn out. There is a seller on e-bay for leather belts he is in Niles, Ill

Also, what about the plastic composition, cut belts, with the skived ends and cement? I've had one on a 9" rear drive at work for over 30 years. The lathe is used multiple times a day.

The real trick is to replace the belts often enough they don't fail on you, and keep the most recently replaced belt in good condition as a spare in case the one on the vehicle gets damaged by road

The silk or nylon/silon stocking trick is an old auto-mechanic's hack. Not sure how it would work in the long run.

just wanted to give my 2cents worth
many years ago i was driving on I78 west in pa with a ford 350 small truck
around 2 am my belt broke and i managed to limp to the next exit
low and behold there

I think if a person were to take nylon hose (not silk stockings) wrap the pulleys while at the shortest adjustment, along with several wraps of fishing line. Then apply the appropriate heat a custom

If you have a rear mount motor drive, I think the automotive serpentine belt is excellent and cheap. I have this on my SB9a. It also gives you a chance to change the felts while you have the spindle

Why are you guys trying to reinvent the wheel and come up with an awkward, more expensive solultion?
Just spend 23 bucks, buy a purpose-built belt for a lathe, and move on with a more worthy

Paul, if you read the comments, yoi will still have to cut the serpentine belt then figure a way to reconnect it. I have heard of folks using TIG wire to do so and have decent results. There is no way
