.0008, if that is the real reading, is quite good for a 4-jaw independent jaw chuck. If .008 is the correct number, you may need to improve your chucking technique. Another thing, you're measuring

Thanks for the patience. The original numbers were the (.006-.008) were the width discrepancy across a 2.5-inch piece of steel that I faced on two opposing edges. The numbers I listed

I've run a two disc bar with no tailstock in the four-jaw to align the bed and spindle successfully. Do not recall the exact tolerance. I could chuck up the bar and run it again. But even if the

Steve H, I think you have the wrong end of the stick on this one.
It isn't so much an issue with the headstock being aligned with the
ways as the face of his 4-jaw is not running true

You might want to obtain a test bar with a Morse taper that fits you spindle taper, they are available on eBay for a reasonable amount of money, or perhaps a friend who owns one would let you borrow
