Re: Oil help
I think there is a correction here: Mick Finch runs the Blue Chip Machine Shop website. I don't see any reference to Ed.
That said, I have contacted him twice through the website with no response.

Re: D1-4 chuck setup
I heard the term 'donut' for the D1 series nose protectors. I found one on ebay (said it was a 'back plate' but obviously not). Looked like this before I removed a bit more metal from its front.

The South Bend Oils are machine oils. As such, they are in the family of hydraulic oils. Light for the spindle ('spindle' or 'turbine' oils), the B and C oils are ISO 32 and ISO 68 oils Such as Mobil

At the end of the day, these old plain bearing lathes are pretty undemanding - any sort of oil that's close to correct viscosity should work just fine. Low speed, low load, low temps - nothing nearly

Proper compressor oils are Naptha based rather than Paraffin style molecule based. Something to do with not oxidising at the high temperatures involved during compression. No idea whether they are

Re: Oil help
I'll start with the question asked in previous message. Quote "Why not just buy the correct oils?"
The biggest problem with that is shipping cost as much as the oil. Well a very good friend turned me

Re: it's alive!!!! - first run of a SB13B I am working on
I’m missing the top pulleys for my lathe. I am thinking of using one pulley on top and a treadmill motor. Is that a serpentine belt you used? Did you use a splicer?

Re: Oil help
I just emailed Ed through his website. Let's see what he says. In these crazy times, it would be good to spend less right now and get just what I need.

Thanks for all the quick replies and info ! I talked to the "guy" that owned it before me and he thinks there may be a box or 2 sitting in his storage unit. It would be nice If I knew whether it was

G'day from Sydney.
Neither did I know that such a thing existed.... did you make it yourself?
Here's a picture of my spindle nose cone with 5C collet adapter and collet.
This lathe is a badged
