Re: spindle oil

John Gallo

The mineral based hydraulic oil I was looking at didn't list any detergent in the ingredients. Would this work?

Re: spindle oil

pepolk@...

hydraulic oil is for transmitting pressure, not lubricating. HyTran International hyd fluid had lubricating qualities but no others did (many destroyed pumps due to ignorant supplier) You want a lube that "Is Not Capable of suspending the impurities, as in "Non Detergent" because if it suspends the impurities it will recirculate the swarf and grit over and over till it destroys the bearing surfaces (you have no filter , even the wicking doesn't solve the problem. You need a mineral oil just as the manufacturers recommended, any deviation and you'll be selling your lathe for parts, very worthless parts I might add.

Hi Alec -- Make sure that you unscrew the star wheel to the left a couple of turns while holding the carriage from moving before tapping with small brass hammer.

Hi

Alec -- The clutch on the star shaft has seized up from
too

much pressure while cutting off. Tap on the star wheel
with

a small brass hammer. Should loosen up. If not, you may
have

to disassemble carriage.

Hi
Alec -- The clutch on the star shaft has seized up from too
much pressure while cutting off. Tap on the star wheel with
a small brass hammer. Should loosen up. If not, you may have
to disassemble carriage.

Re: spindle oil

eddie.draper@btinternet.com

I see no reason why not.  It is probably better, as it will contain antiwear additives for ferrous against ferrous metals, making it ideal for lathes with C/I bearings.  Should also be OK for bronze & whitemetal at the sort of temperatures you get in lathe bearings.

No problems from the other sorts of additives you get in engine oils, like dispersants, detergents, multigrade polymers etc. as they aren't in hydraulic oil.

Is hydraulic oil interchangeable with machine oil? From the files I see that the spindle bearings on a 9A take ISO 22 machine oil. Can I use ISO 22 hydraulic oil? Thanks, John

Long time lurker here.

Right, so the guys that have that shaper I posted about a couple days ago have a massive pile of old South Bend 9 and 10 series lathes and accessories that they want to sell and get gone. I'm honestly disappointed that I can't afford to purchase them myself, didn't stop me from getting a bunch of stuff. They then asked me if I'd lend a hand on getting the stuff to move, I told em I'd ask around in exchange for some other goodies down the road.
So, anyone in the market? They have about 2 dozen and are looking to sell them for around 1k a pop fully assembled. As far as I know they're willing to ship too.
So, what are y'all's thoughts? Price too steep? Normally I'd be doubting the heck out of anyone that wants $1500 for a lathe that is over 60 years old, but when you can still see the scraping on the ways.......
They have about a dozen and a half. 9a's b's and c's. They also have a big ole pile of accessories, like ball turning attachments and milling attachments for the SB series of lathes.
They're down in Woodruff, SC, just outside Spartanburg. I know that they will ship em, but pickup is easier/cheaper.

Re: 13” Southbend Lathe Model No.

Ted,

That's very interesting. My Fourteen has a D1-4. Always thought it was D1-3 until recently, when I measured all the mounting dimensions and found it is the larger size.  So now I know a bit more about when it was built.  Thanks!

Ted,
I don't remember seeing a serial number from the late 1940's for a D1-3., but it was an option. The later 14VS and the 1307 had them, I believe.

Are you sure about that info ????
I'm not sure. I have had at least 2 machines (13" and a Heavy 10) with the CLC catalog number and neither one had a D1-4.    Both had 2 speed motors....
????
Ted

Very nice looking machine, could you post your serial number please.
The CLC is part of the catalog number, identifying the spindle nose.
CLC = D1-4 Cam Lock spindle.
