Now if I could only find one of those flat countershaft pulleys, I'd be in like Flynn.

Here are the South Bend Forms for the belts and pulleys, and the horizontal and underdrive for 9" and 10K lathes. Also the speed chard from my HTRAL.

Note that while the motor pulleys are V-pulleys, the countershaft is flat. The V-Belt runs on it perfectly.

The spindle speed chart doesn't show up well, here it is in pdf...

Interesting; I have two of the stock pulleys and both the one on my lathe and the spare have 5/8 bore. the original motor on my 10K has of course the 5/8 shaft.
I used to have a 1948 9 inch SB and still have the original motor and it also is 5/8" as well. The later 10L etc. may be 3/4" shaft/pulley but there are options listed, some 3PH and single phase 1/2 and 3/4 HP.
My spare pulley is listed as having a 3/4" bore but in fact is 5/8"
Strange is often, me thinks.

Questions... what was the original motor shaft size, and is it worth attempting to find original pulleys to have the extra speed options?

Whatever you do, I was advised that the published speeds in the SB manual should not be exceeded--at least not by much.

When I got my 1946 9C, the drive pulley on the motor (1/2" shaft) was too large. I was able to purchase the correct size at a hardware store.

Good luck.

I probably confused my question.  The flat is on the entire length.  I just realized that a Weldon flat is a short section that is flat.
Thanks.

Just don’t clamp down on the bar where the Weldon flat is if possible with the collet. Or use a Morse Taper shank end mill holder but that won’t be ‘pass through’ and may not suit your application.

Quick question.  I have a 5/8" round tooling bar with a 'Weldon' flat on it.
Is it ok to use this with my 10k 5/8" collet?  Will the flat cause damage the collet?
I guess that this question would be for all standard collets.
Thanks,
Dan

Oils for South Bend lathes

Maybe this will help some folks that are looking for just a small amount of oil for there SB lathes.

I spoke to the folks up in Largo, Fl (toolguys2) on ebay. I told them the oils for the 9"& 10K and they put the 4 PINTS together for $36.47 including tax and shipping. For those that need a small amount like me I think it's a good deal.

Thanks Todd. Many times small museums rely heavily on volunteers. The USS Kidd museum in Baton Rouge, LA is no exception. Takes a lot of work to keep a 76 year old boat open for viewing. I'm glad I can be a service to them.

After you enter your zip code, pick from the drop-down the commercial paint stores. You may have to drive a ways, as they are very few (in small towns or rural areas) when compared to the regular stores. The regular stores can provide you the same paint, but only as a special order that may take a few days to arrive.

YMMV, depending on where you live.

Thanks John, makes total sense! Looks pretty reasonably priced as well, around  $15 per spray can which would be plenty to do a 36 inch bed.

Re: South Bend "Heavy" 9" 480YN: Interior Paint Question

Vince,
That "interior yellow" paint is very probably zinc chromate primer.
This type of metal primer used to be very common. It's still available, and still works very well. Common to dip prime castings before final finish machining; bet this was done by SB. Mostly used in the marine trades these days. Example is Seymour 16-897.
Hope this helps!
