Re: 1964 10K headstock cover question
Nelson Collar
A lot of lathes did not come with covers and the era of that machine it could be older.

I'm sure you can find a pic of it. I've seen them on Ebay in the 75 to 150 range If you can confirm it I have a spare you can have if you don't mind waiting till late winter spring. I used my glass bead cabinet for a lot of the cleaning, plus have my Logan 922 11 inch for some of the round polishing work. I'm retired now with over 50 years on the shop floor, so hopefully my work does speak for itself. Can anyone help me identify it so I can track one down? My rebuild manual was of no help, so even a picture or so of an existing one would be helpful.

The photos here can at least help you identify what you what you are looking for. The top cover comes up on ebay from time to time, but I haven't noticed one lately. http://www.lathes.co.uk/southbend/page8.html

You might be able to find parts diagram(s) or photos that will help at the www.wswells.com site. Other sites to check are www.vintagemachinery.org

Correct, my casting is closed on the bottom and doesn't have the hinge/mounting bosses present in an underdrive unit.

Ah, looking at your pictures again, you must have a rear-mount drive (It looks like the bottom of the headstock is visible, and that would certainly be different, if that's what I think it is.). I don't think I can help, but let me know.

I am also in the process of restoring a 10k that went through a fire...you've accomplished a lot more than I have! I do have the guards, for mine, and I can post pictures if that's useful. I'm unsure from your message: *is* your lathe an underdrive unit? Mine is -- which will probably make a bit of a difference here.

1964 10K headstock cover question
Hi guys and gals
Winter is approaching and I hope to have the time to reassemble my 10K. This machine didn't come with the belt/gear guard in place when I acquired it. The headstock casting is not the same as a 9" and is not the same as the underdrive units I have seen online. This lathe was bench mounted when I found it, but had no guard in place at the time. The machine was disassembled for refinishing as it had been in a fire, but didn't get hot enough to destroy it. I probably have 200 hours or more invested in it for the teardown, disassembly and refinishing. Chuck Lippmeier
Thanks all for your responses. It’s too bad this article is so confusing. I’m thinking now that it would be easier to just put an adjustable speed power feed on the compound and eliminate the whole problem. Chuck Lippmeier

Re: 9" Taper attachment plans
On the 9" with factory taper attachment, the connecting bar is integral to the cross slide.

Re: 9" Taper attachment plans
South Bend calls the 'Cross-Feed Tailpiece' the 'connecting bar'. It's this part (at least on a 13"):

Re: 9" Taper attachment plans
Looking at the article, the author calls it the “Cross-Feed Tailpiece” in the Bill of Materials on Page 50 of the article. This is Detail 8. Then in the upper LH corner of Page 52, the drawing for Detail 8 is shown and the detail is called the “Cross-Slide Tailpiece”. So an error in editing. Drawing calls for a piece of cold rolled steel, 1/4” x 3-1/8” x 10-1/2”. I think I would use 3” wide material myself.

Re: 9" Taper attachment plans
I assume by the name it is the detail that gets bolted on the rear end of the upper cross slide (that would be the piece that the compound sits on)- the cross-slide tailpiece has a long slot down the center of it.

Group, I bought the eBay post for the “Home Shop Machinist” 2004 Jan/Feb. edition. As I read, it refers to a “Cross-feed tailpiece” What is a “cross-slide tailpiece”? Chuck Lippmeier

Hi. I don't know who is building the taper att. but I do have three castings he may be interested in them. I rebuilt my factory taper att. into a teliscoping taper att. several years ago. Kept the parts I wanted to use. Kept the rest in a box.(pack rat) Bruce

I have scanned it, but file is 18MB (I guess I could do it again at lower resolution). PM me and I can send it. My Canon 9000 scanner will keep all the pdf pages in one doc. Free pdfill http://www.pdfill.com/pdf_tools_free.html will also do the same....
