The newer lathes like mine has a large thrust bearing to the left of the cone and the thrust bearing goes on the outside if the casting to sandwich it between bearing on the tail end of the spindle. The take-up nut applies the pressure removing almost all the end play. I do not know about your lathe. 
Stick with it, you can solve the puzzle.

No.  It has one bearing right in front of the gear as my picture shows.  The other bearing is on the other side of the cone pulley. Right behind the flange where the chuck mounts.
