South Bend used to sell a skived leather Vee belt for the 9", both horizontal and under drive.

The problem still remains as to how a V belt was ever installed.  As you can see in the picture, the belt goes down a tunnel cast into the headstock.  There is a similar tunnel cast into the backside where the belt would come back up.  Did they make segmented belts in those days?
