The grease goes between the spindle and the cone pulley not the spindle bearings. Only gets used when in back gear,

Wouldn’t put grease of any kind on the spindle, the wick will block up if the lathe has that type of lubricator, ie sucks it up from the reservoir onto the rotating spindle, no contamination here pure oil into the bearing, if you place grease into the bearing it will gather on the tip of the felt wick which is under the shaft and block the capillary action, so no grease on the spindle, 11th commandment.
