Machining A Pointed Shaft To Length

Stephen Bartlett

I occasionally need to make a few axles for model railroad use.

They are usually 1/8 inch diameter round stock, any machinable steel, with tips pointed around 75 degrees included angle.

That part is easy. The question is how to get them to desired length, around 1.75 inches, within 0.020 inches, pointed both ends.

All I can think of is a collet stop or putting a witness mark on the axle and gaging or measuring the length from the mark.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Thanks,

Steve Bartlett
