config.cfg

that should have been called the ServoConfig.cfg....

If I place  long/lat in the ServoConfig.cfg file in the ServoConfig folder, will the two apps pick it up?

I was thinking about using a GPS dongle and writing code to keep from having to update it manually.

Hi V,

If you once put the Lat/Long into SiTechexe/ChangeConfig, then SiTech will know and remember the location for all time.  There is no need to (in fact you can't) put the lat/long into Servoconfig - it doesn't use the location at all.

Hi V,

If you are setting up SiTech at different locations each night, then using gps might be usable.  However the need for precise location is really now needed.  When you setup and do an OffSetInit with SiTech using a PC,  SiTech synchs to the sky at that location regarding RA.  However the Latitude affects the display of SkyView.  The Latitude does not have to be precise - to within a few degrees - it is only a display.  Once you synch the mount it will be precise and slew to your targets fine.

I don't think you need GPS at all except in the field to set precise time for a PC.  But even that won't make observing and imaging any more accurate.

I did us a SiTech time server (reading GPS) when I traveled to Idaho in the field to know the precise time for the Eclipse.  So there are times when GPS can be useful.

My reason for wanting an easy way to change the lat/long is to help provide an accurate goto experience. I need the seek to be very accurate. I will use the scope for asteroid occultation work and need to have the goto's get the target starfield into the FOV pretty consistently. The target stars are usually 12th-13th mag, so when I seek (the camera will already be on the scope), I need to FOV of the camera to match the printout of the star field. tick-tock, the clock is ticking! LOL

So, anything I can do to get the alignment as accurate as possible is a big help. As a comparison, my other occultation scope is a Celestron C8. I use the Auto two-star alignment to do a rough alignment, then use the Precise "goto" feature to make it more accurate. It is rare that the FOV doesn't match my starfield.

My scope has 30" mount encoders, so seeks shouldn't be too difficult.

Hi Vince,

For high accuracy what you need is to do a Platesolve near your target, that will get you within less than an arc-sec.  You will never get that accuracy the way you are going.

Vince,
Rather than using alignment stars, have you tried plate solving? It is significantly more accurate and programs such as APT and NINA will iteratively plate solve and slew until you are within your desired accuracy, (6 arc seconds for my setup).

I still am working getting the alignment procedures to work.
The type of camera I use is a low light analog (VGA resolution, NTSC or PAL) camera which goes through a analog to digital converter to create video files. Would that work for plate solving?

Hi Vince,

For platesolving with SiTech, you need to use a camera control software listed in the ChangeConfig/CameraStuff.  I don't know if any of those camera control programs can use your camera.

If I enter the Lat/Long via the SiTechexe/ChangeConfig, where is it stored on the PC?

Hi Vince,

All the settings for SiTechexe are stored in the SiTech.cfg file.  you can find it easily by opening ChangeConfig on the first Tab (ScopeTab) and click the top box - that will open the folder that contaims the SiTech.cfg file.
