Setting up time server....

Darrel Moon

The online manual for the SiTech Time Server states:  "Connect the Ethernet port of the SiTech Time Server to your local area network, via a cat5 (or compatible) cable."

In my observatory, I have no "local area network". I use my cell phone hotspot for internet connectivity; the computer is
standalone otherwise.

So the question is, how is the SiTech time server connected to my computer, just by USB or is the ethernet port used as well?

Thanks,

Darrel Moon

Darrel,

USB is only used for configuration, after that, you use the Ethernet port only.
LAN is required and WIFI is not an option.
A remote LAN can be setup with this https://www.gl-inet.com/products/gl-mt300n-v2/
If you are interested, let me know and I will post the schematics.

Best,
Russell R.

Sorry to be so dense here. I only want to set my computer’s clock time using the SiTech time server; my computer is not connected to any network.

Why do I need a router to direct data to my computer via ethernet from the SiTech device; won’t the SiTech time server talk directly to my computer via ethernet? What is the point of adding an additional networking device to the system and adding further delays of timing data to the mix?

Assuming that I do need a router for what ever reason, couldn’t the SiTech time server have had a simple router built in or a least make it clear that it won’t work without further networking device(s)?

Last week I was able to connect our time server directly to my computer via an ethernet cable.  You would probably need to set up your computer to a static IP address, and also, you'll have to configure your time server to the same first 3 of your ip address, and a different on the last.
For instance,
Computer
192.168.0 43

Time Server:
192.168.0 99

Thanks Dan,

When the time server arrives, I shall try to set it up as you described. Are there instructions included with the time server or will I have to beg for help here?
