Project Archaeologist

General Description

OVAI is seeking a Project Archaeologist to join our team of experienced and motivated professionals in our Columbus, Ohio office.

We are looking for an individual to lead and complete archaeological projects based primarily in the Ohio region. The Project Archaeologist is expected to competently design and conduct field work compliant with state and federal regulations; conduct records research with SHPOs; coordinate utility clearances for fieldwork; and write and edit records reviews, Phase I, Phase II, and Phase III cultural resource management technical reports. Responsibilities include directing field staff, guiding clients through the regulatory process, and assisting in the development of proposals and budgets.

This is a full-time, salaried position that comes with benefits, including paid vacation and paid personal time, a comprehensive medical/vision/dental healthcare plan, and a retirement plan. Salary is commensurate with capabilities.

Requirements

-Master’s degree specializing in archaeology, anthropology, or a closely related field;

-Demonstrated report writing experience;

-Strong research and analysis skills;

-GIS experience;

-A sound understanding of the NHPA and NRHP-eligibility;

-Minimum field experience of two years;

-Knowledge of North American prehistoric and historic period archaeology;

-Willingness to travel locally and nationally;

-Excellent verbal and written communication skills; and

-A valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation.

Other Responsibilities

The position requires the regular use of Trimble GPS, ArcGIS, transit/total stations, draw programs, and office-based data processing. Flexibility and willingness to travel often and frequently (both locally and out of state when required) is expected. This position also requires the ability to work outdoors in various types of weather, sufficient physical endurance to conduct archaeological field investigations in remote and challenging environments, and the ability to carry equipment (shovel, screen, GPS unit, cameras) while conducting fieldwork. This includes maintenance and responsible use of all OVAI-owned equipment. The ability to read and understand maps, prepare field records and drawings, and manage field teams are also required of this position. The position requires the ability to process field data and prepare well-written reports in accordance with OVAI standards. The Project Archaeologist is expected to comply with OVAI company policies and make sure employees under their direction do as well.
