On-Call Archaeological Monitor, L&L Environmental. Riverside County. $20-28/hr BOE

L&L Environmental, Inc. (L&L) is seeking a local and experienced on-call Archaeological Monitor to assist with ongoing/upcoming monitoring projects in Riverside County. Applicant must have experience monitoring grading/trenching and other ground disturbing activities and be comfortable working around heavy machinery.  Applicant must also have previous experience monitoring in areas of prehistoric and historic archaeological sensitivity and know how to respond if/when archaeological resources are discovered.  The ability to read grading plans and communicate with operators using hand signals and other non-verbal forms of communication is a plus.  Applicant must be professional, dependable, show up to work on time, maintain clear lines of communication with the Project Archaeologist, and complete all tasks required of the job including daily monitoring logs.

Candidates may be required to walk up to 7 miles per day sometimes in difficult terrain while carrying materials and supplies.  Candidates must be able to sit, stoop, bend, climb, and use hand tools, shovels, and screening and other field equipment.  Lodging and per diem are provided when overnight stays are required and are determined on a project-by-project basis.  Out-of-town travel may be required.  Wet weather and field conditions may result in work schedule delays or cancelled workdays.  Construction schedules may vary, include partial or full days, and/or require working weekends and holidays.

All work will be based out of our Redlands office and will be performed on an on-call basis.

Responsibilities:

Archaeological Monitors must possess archaeological field skills for construction monitoring and excavation work including:

  • Ability to identify and assess prehistoric and historical archaeological materials in the field;
  • Ability to work safely and efficiently on construction sites around large machinery;
  • Ability to perform archaeological excavations;
  • Ability to carry 40 lbs. over rough terrain over the course of an 8-hour workday;
  • Ability to work in extreme climatic conditions, cold or hot weather;
  • Ability to listen, follow instructions, and communicate clearly and effectively with supervisors or construction contractors during monitoring jobs;
  • Ability to take clear and comprehensive notes and prepare DPR 523 Forms;
  • Ability to read topographic maps and project engineering plans.

Archaeological Monitors are expected to have good interpersonal communication skills, be detail oriented, safety oriented, dependable, proficient, have personal and professional integrity and ethics, perform as a team player, and produce high quality work.

Qualifications:

Qualified Archaeological Monitors will have (at a minimum):

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology or a closely related field (B.A. or B.S.) or twelve (12) months experience as an archaeological monitor in southern California;
  • Certification from an accredited archaeological field school or comparable experience (preferably in southern California);
  • Ability to travel to a location, walk and conduct monitoring activities for long hours (sometimes in inclement weather and rugged terrain), and ability to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds is required;
  • Current valid driver's license (ability to safely operate a 4WD vehicle on rugged, backcountry roads preferred);
  • Knowledge/experience with ArcGIS Collector, Survey123, ArcPad, or TerraSync is a plus.
