On-Call Archaeological Monitors Needed (Davis, California)

FCS International, Inc. (dba FirstCarbon Solutions) is searching for on-call Archaeological and Paleontological Field Monitors / Technicians to assist with field surveys, inventories, site recording, excavations and site condition assessments in northern California.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Monitor will perform field surveys, inventories, site recording, excavations and site condition assessments
  • Identify cultural and paleontological materials while working with construction crews and around heavy equipment
  • Collect and maintain field data in an organized manner 
  • Implement and adhere to established data collection, inventory, recording, and monitoring protocols
  • Assist in field report writing, Trimble and GPS operation

Skills

  • Ability to demonstrate proper field work protocols and techniques
  • Proven ability to create results and complete assignments in a timely fashion, many times under strict deadlines, while maintaining a positive attitude and professionalism.
  • Keen attention to detail
  • Strong self-motivation and ability to work independently with minimum guidance
  • Able to follow instructions and ask informed questions
  • Proficiency in MS Office software applications, especially Word and Excel
  • Excellent writing, analytical, and communication skills

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in anthropology, archaeology, paleontology or geology with focus on paleontology
  • Minimum of 2+ years of archaeological field experience working with construction crews and around heavy equipment
  • Experience in desert and rural conditions, and have direct experience identifying cultural and paleontological materials during construction.
  • Ability to understand, implement and adhere to established data collection, inventory, recording, and monitoring protocols.
  • Capacity to collect and maintain field data in an organized manner that is easily understood and accessible to other resource staff

The Ideal candidates will also have:

  • Understanding of federal and state laws, regulations, standards, and guidelines governing cultural resources.  
  • Experience with various State and federal agencies and Native American tribes

Work Environment

The position will be exposed to all weather conditions and terrain. The position requires working outdoors and travel to project sites. 

 

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

 

Completing archaeological surveys in the desert requires the physical endurance to walk over a variety of terrains and in a variety of weather conditions, including extreme heat, and carry a heavy pack.  Physical requirements for the position include the ability to stand, bend, and kneel for long periods of time, lift at least 20 lbs. and hike 5+ miles per day.
