Historical Research Associates, Inc. Seeks to Hire

STAFF AND FIELD ARCHAEOLOGISTS

Historical Research Associates, Inc. (HRA), is a company of cultural
resource and historical consultants based in Montana, with offices in
Missoula, Seattle, and Washington, D.C. Since 1974, HRA has undertaken
projects for public and private clients in various regions. Archaeologists
in the Seattle and Missoula offices work in the Pacific Northwest, Northern
Rocky Mountains, and other areas. HRA seeks several archaeologists with
experience in Cultural Resource Management (CRM) in the Northwest/Northern
Rocky Mountains, for projects in the Seattle and Missoula offices. These
positions include approximately three staff archaeologists, two field crew
supervisors, and several field and laboratory crew members. Work starts in
January 2000.

Staff Archaeologists. One staff archaeologist is needed in HRA's Missoula
office and two in the Seattle office. The staff archaeologists would work
full-time and on contract for six months, with the possibility of converting
to regular, full-time positions. Starting salary will be appropriate to a
mid-level or junior-level, depending on qualifications and experience.
Benefits include holidays, sick leave, vacation, and health and disability
insurance.

Responsibilities include conducting background research, survey and
excavation fieldwork, and laboratory analysis; writing short reports or
portions of large reports; and coordinating with other HRA staff members.
Work tasks may involve determinations of significance, evaluation of
impacts, and design of mitigation measures. This work can include all types
of cultural resources, not just prehistoric archaeological sites. Skills
include working independently, on teams, and being able to serve as a field
crew supervisor. Periodic travel, especially for fieldwork, will be
required. Field sessions often involve 10 consecutive work days separated
by 4 days off.

Preferred qualifications include a Master's degree (this is
required for
the Missoula office position) in archaeology and two years of experience in
CRM, preferably involving Section 106 compliance projects in the
Northwest/Northern Rocky Mountains. Applicants must demonstrate ability and
experience in research, survey, excavation, analysis, and writing; have good
interpersonal and communication skills; and be willing to travel often.
Familiarity with software such as MS Word, Access, Excel, and graphics
programs is helpful.

Crew Supervisors. Two crew supervisors are needed for the Seattle office
for six-month contracts. This position supervises crew members in the
performance of archaeological survey, excavation, or laboratory work;
collects and organizes field data; coordinates crew equipment, supplies, and
logistics. Qualifications include a B.A. degree in Anthropology/Archaeology
or related discipline; three years of experience in archaeological
fieldwork; knowledge of field methods and ability to conduct fieldwork
effectively; good leadership, interpersonal, and communication skills;
familiarity with computer word processing and data base systems; physical
ability to conduct fieldwork under various environmental conditions; and
willingness to travel often. Wages and any benefits will depend on
qualifications and contract needs.

Field/Lab Crew Members. Several field/lab crew members are needed for
Seattle and Missoula office projects. This position performs various tasks
on survey and excavation crews. Qualifications include a B.A. degree in
Anthropology/Archaeology or related discipline; one year of experience in
archaeological fieldwork; knowledge of field methods; interpersonal and
communications skills; ability to operate photographic equipment;
familiarity with computer word processing and data base systems; physical
ability to conduct fieldwork under various environmental conditions; and
willingness to travel often. Wages will depend on qualifications and
contract needs.
