Cultural Resources Technician at Mojave National Preserve  

Job Description: 
In cooperation with the National Park Service (NPS) at Mojave National Preserve (MOJA), the Great Basin Institute (GBI) is recruiting for a Cultural Resources Technician to join the Research Associate (RA) Program. The Technician will focus on conducting an archaeological survey of 2,000 acres of newly acquired lands throughout the Preserve. Many, if not most of these acquired properties contain vestiges of the historic period for which this area was active, but what may remain on these parcels is unknown. The RA will support documentation and monitoring of cultural resources, with a particular focus on historic resources.

More specifically, the Cultural Resources Technician RA will engage in tasks including:
Assisting the Park Archaeologist with field investigations, including site recording and photography;
Conducting archival research;
Data entry and site form preparation;
Compiling site records, images, and background research into a comprehensive document;
Assisting with other related activities as needed; and
Participating in GBI and NPS training opportunities.

Location: 
Mojave National Preserve (MOJA) spans 1.6 million acres, with about 44% of the area designated as Wilderness. While most of MOJA is made up of the Mojave Desert, components of the Great Basin desert are found in higher elevations and parts of the southern portion of the park are made up of the Sonoran desert. Resources of the region include threatened and/or endangered species habitat, big game habitats, abandoned mine lands, and historic and prehistoric cultural sites.

Compensation: 
  • Rate of Pay: $22.50/hour
  • Completely covered Health, Dental, and Vision benefits plan
  • Field per diem
  • Paid holidays and personal leave
Timeline: 
  • 11 week appointment to begin in February 2021
  • Full time, 40 hours per week (overtime and/or weekend hours may be required occasionally)occasionally)
Qualifications: 
A Bachelor’s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, Cultural Resource Management, or similar discipline; 
Relevant field experience in archaeology, anthropology, cultural resource management, or similar discipline;
Familiarity with cultural resource management on public lands will be considered a plus;
An understanding of basic principles and approaches related to performing archaeological site condition assessments and site recordation, 
Knowledge of archaeology of the Colorado Plateau is preferred;
Experience with standard field techniques to survey and assess cultural resources;
Ability to navigate and collect data using handheld GPS units and read a topographic map;
Exposure to using GIS software (e.g., ArcMap) to upload, create and manipulate data and maps, preferred;
Experience using Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator considered a plus;
Experience working with Microsoft computer programs; 
Ability to communicate effectively, both written and orally, with a diverse audience;
Capacity to work independently and within a team environment;
Must be motivated, self-directed, organized, and detail oriented in order to balance multiple tasks simultaneously;
Physically fit to work long hours outdoors, carry personal and field equipment, and withstand the climatic rigors of the desert; 
Willingness and ability to camp for consecutive days, as needed, in backcountry settings; and
Possess a clean, valid, state-issued driver’s license with the ability to safely operate a 4WD vehicle on unimproved roads. 

Successful applicant must complete a Department of Interior (DOI) Background Investigation (BI) or submit paperwork to NPS human resources indicating an active and fully adjudicated BI has already been completed prior to beginning position.
