Cultural Resources Internship, Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska

A Cultural Resources Internship (Seasonal employment for 18 weeks, 40 hours/week) position is available with the Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML). This internship position will provide entry-level training and experience on a range of cultural resource projects supporting the Cultural Resources Program at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson (JBER) in Alaska.

JBER is a 79,000-acre United States (U.S.) military installation near Anchorage, Alaska. In 2010, JBER was created when Elmendorf Air Force Base and the U.S. Army’s Fort Richardson were merged. The U.S. Air Force mission of JBER is to provide tactical support and training for worldwide air sovereignty, combat, and strategic airlift missions. The JBER cultural resources team is responsible for managing and promoting the preservation of historic sites on the installation. The team is responsible for many archaeological sites and historic buildings around JBER that offer unique views of the past, including Nike Site Summit, a Cold War era missile defense system listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) and open to public tours. The Cultural Resources Intern will support the JBER cultural resources team by collecting field data at least two days per week and processing data in the lab for the remaining days. Field work will consist of archaeological pedestrian (walking) surveys, site evaluations for the NRHP, condition assessments, investigation for Phase II evaluations of sites, site boundary delineations, subsurface testing, and participating in public outreach tours of Nike Site Summit led by a Veterans group. The lab work will consist of processing the data collected, generating summary reports, drafting State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) correspondence, and using ArcGIS to process boundary-delineation data.

 

Required vehicle and safety trainings will be provided.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

·        Currently enrolled or recent graduate (within the past two years) of a Graduate Degree program in cultural resources management, archaeology, architectural history, historic preservation, history, or a related field;

·        Fluent with MS Office programs;

·        Experience using shapefiles in ArcGIS and Esri software;

·        Demonstrated experience in archaeological field methods;

·        Must have a valid driver’s license to operate federal vehicles, including trucks and off-road vehicles;

·        The successful candidate must be physically capable of working in remote outdoor locations under inclement environmental conditions, which may include poor air quality when wildfires occur in the area. The field activities will require constant walking, carrying equipment, and kneeling on uneven and wet terrain in thick underbrush inhabited by a various wildlife species including mosquitos and bears. Technicians will not work independently in known bear habitats;

·        Must be able to pass a federal background investigation to obtain a DoD Installation Access Pass; and

·        The successful candidate must demonstrate U.S. employment eligibility; CEMML will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.

 

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

·        Local (Anchorage) or regional (southcentral AK) residency for commuting purposes is preferred;

·        Ability to work independently and as part of a team;

·        Solid research, technical writing, and communication skills;

·        Strong attention to detail; and

·        First Aid certification desirable.

 

PAY RATE

Pay rate is $18/hour and the work period will not exceed 90 working days (or 720 hours).  The anticipated start date is June 14, 2021.
