Job Description

PaleoWest is seeking an Archaeological Field Director/Lead Monitor for upcoming projects in Northern California. The Field Director’s role will involve executing/directing monitoring treatment plans, writing reports, conducting resource documentation and assessments, and supervising archaeological field staff and monitors.

Qualifications
  • M.A. or M.S. degree in archaeology, anthropology, or a closely related field is required
  • Must satisfy Secretary of the Interior’s (SOI) Professional Qualifications Standards in Archaeology
  • Must have 3+ years’ experience directing field projects
  • Skills in geomorphology and geoarchaeology preferred
  • Must demonstrate ability to identify and assess subsurface and surface archaeological deposits
  • Must have demonstrated experience evaluating resources for listing on the National Register of Historic Places
  • Must have field experience in Northern California
  • Current valid driver’s license
  • Ability to endure adverse environmental conditions, including hot and cold temperatures, precipitation, and challenging terrain for sustained durations
  • Must demonstrate excellent ability to lead through others, attention to detail, a positive work ethic, reliability, and commitment to working both independently and in a team environment
Additional Information

The successful candidate will demonstrate experience supervising field projects in Northern California, particularly testing and data recovery excavations as well as monitoring. Please note any specializations in specific subdisciplines of archaeology, such as geoarchaeology, historical archaeology, lithic analysis, etc. A willingness to work in the field and to travel when necessary is necessary. This position will require supervising and training of field staff during projects.
