Director of Operations, Richmond, Virginia - Exempt



Performs marketing, client retention, proposal and budget construction, project staffing and management, and report preparation, Oversees day-to-day office administration and operational functions under the direction and supervision of the CEO, Vice President of Operations.


Essential Functions

·         Primary point of contact with clients and regulatory agencies. Represents the company during meetings with clients and regulatory agencies.

·         Works directly with clients to establish project/contract parameters and to maintain excellent client relations.

·         Prepares and negotiates proposals, work plans, scopes of work, man-hour estimates and project budgets.

·         Responsible for project scheduling and personnel assignments.

·         Coordinates projects with CEO, senior marketing executive, and senior management staff.

·         Works closely with individual Project Directors and/or Principal Investigators to ensure adherence to project schedule, work plan, safety and budget.

·         Provides technical assistance to project supervisors and field and laboratory staff: including field and laboratory methods and theory; and the description, analysis, interpretation, and evaluation of data.

·         Reviews reports to ensure technical accuracy and compliance with regulatory standards.

·         In the interests of CRA, has the authority to employ the use of independent judgment to hire, transfer, suspend, lay off, recall, promote, discharge, assign, reward, and discipline other employees, and the responsibility to direct them, adjust their grievances, and/or to effectively recommend such action.

·         Works with the CEO and others at CRA in marketing and soliciting of new business.

·         Provides oversight of company’s health and safety, and OSHA compliance program.

·         Required Education and Experience: Must have at least 15 years’ experience in respective field. Must have at least 10 years of cultural resource contracting experience as a project supervisor and/or principal investigator.

·         Skills/Qualifications

·         Must have good written and verbal communication skills.  Must have excellent technical writing skills.  Must have good personal computer skills, being proficient in word processing, spreadsheet, database, and cad applications.  Must have excellent knowledge of relevant historic preservation legislation and regulations.  Must have a valid driver’s license and pass a background check. 


·         Supervisory Responsibilities

·         Responsible for supervising Project Archaeologists, Staff Archaeologists, and Field Technicians. 


·         Work Environment

·         This position requires that the employee work both outdoors and indoors as necessary. Outdoor work may include long, continuous periods of fieldwork where exposure to extreme weather elements, dirt and dust, unpleasant smells, and/or loud noises are possible. Fieldwork is conducted year round including hot, humid summers and cold winters.  All weather conditions/elements may be encountered. In the laboratory and office, the employee may process and analyze artifacts, conduct data entry, conduct research, and write reports.

·         The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job.


·         While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate and converse with employees, maintain a stationary position (standing and sitting), move/traverse, kneel, bend, and reach with hands and arms for extended periods of time. The worker may be required to operate in close quarters, crawl spaces, small rooms, and narrow aisles and passageways.


·         Must be able to stoop, bend, lift heavy objects, and do general manual labor such as digging, sifting and moving wheel barrows of dirt from one location to another.  Must be able to work 10-12 hour days when necessary and walk/hike with field pack in rough terrain and variable weather conditions.


·         In order to effectively perform the essential functions of this role, the employee will be required to meet the physical demands of the field, which may include performing work in rough terrain; digging shovel or auger probes and excavation units; taking notes and recording resources; carrying the necessary field equipment; and other physical duties as directed by your supervisor.


·         This position requires the ability to stand to lift boxes of up to 50 pounds and possess the visual acuity required to accurately observe and describe archaeological sites, features, and artifacts.


·         Position Type

·         This is a full time exempt position.  Days of work are generally Monday thru Friday, but the timing of work is flexible based on the need.  Evening, night, and weekend work may be required as duties demand.
