Iowa Field Tech needed

Midwest Archaeological Consultants (MAC) is a Wisconsin-based cultural resources management company.  MAC has an opening for a field technician in Iowa. Extensive travel throughout the state is required.  MAC may have work in MN, IL and WI as well.  Experience working in the Midwest is desirable.


Qualified candidates must possess:


  1. Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or a related field.
  2. Completed an accredited archaeological field school.
  3. A minimum of 2-years of archaeological field experience. Experience conducting shovel testing and lots of pedestrian survey in agricultural fields.
  4. Ability to write clearly and concisely and complete notes of a project area, descriptions and photographs.
  5. Capability of working in inclement weather. Basic ability to identify prehistoric & historic artifacts.
  6. Ability to work both individually and as part of a team, and a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation. 
  7. Proficiency in reading the landscape and in discerning a disturbed context from a natural context and identifying soils.
  8. Above all, self-motivated individual, hard-working, adherence to schedules and can perform work in a timely manner. 
  9. Field tech is responsible for providing basic equipment, personal laptop, ¼” screen, shovels, trowels, scale.


Mileage, per diem and lodging are provided for all workdays.  Pay rate is commensurate with experience.  Background Security Check and references.  MAC is an equal opportunity employer.




Due to the current COVID-19 Pandemic, all project personnel will strictly adhere to MAC’s Pandemic Response Plan and COVID-19 Field Safety Plan while conducting fieldwork for the duration of the project.


Candidates who meet the following criteria will not be eligible for employment with MAC at this time:

Tested positive for COVID-19 within two weeks of the start date for field work.

Staying with or caring for an individual who has tested positive for COVID-19 within two weeks of the start date of fieldwork.

The following PPE will not be provided by MAC in response to the COVID-19 Pandemic:


Disposable latex/nitrile gloves

Disposable or re-useable face masks

Hand sanitizer or hand wipes


While not mandatory, everyone is encouraged to bring their own face masks, gloves, or hand sanitizer/hand wipes. Anyone who uses a re-usable face mask is responsibility for sanitizing the face mask daily for the duration of the project.
