Field Archeologists Job Announcement

Quality Services, Inc., Rapid City, South Dakota is hiring field archeologists. Positions will last two to eight months with the potential to convert to full time staff employees. Field work schedules are generally 10 hours per day for up to 8 or 10 work days followed by two to six days off. Overtime work may be required. Lodging and per diem is provided for overnight work trips away from Rapid City.

Pay rates vary depending on the position, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities. Positions start April 1, 2019 to June 1, 2019.

Projects will involve mitigative excavation, surveys, and site evaluation.

1. Excavation positions are available in old Chinatown, Deadwood, South Dakota and may include

analysis and report preparation.

2. Survey work will primarily be in Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Minnesota, including

multiple small to large scale inventories for wind farms, seismic exploration, or other developments, and National Register of Historic Places evaluation projects.

Applicants must demonstrate appropriate professional and personal skills particular to the positions (excavation, inventory, etc.), profession, region and industries served. Employees are required to provide their own Personal Protection Equipment (boots, hard hats, safety vests, gloves, hearing protection) and personal field equipment (trowel, at least one 5 to 10 meter tape measure and one 30 meter tape measure; and other personal equipment needed in ordinary archeological survey or excavation). Candidates should be able to walk 10 miles per day carrying field equipment. Inclement weather may occur year round.

Skills highly desirable in potential employees include:


a. common sense and the ability to think for oneself, assess a situation and draw reasonable

conclusions based on studying the facts;

b. good interpersonal and communication skills which will allow one to deal effectively with the

public, private landowners, clients, regulatory personnel, supervisors and co-workers;

c. the ability to follow and give written and verbal instructions;

d. knowledge and implementation of appropriate safety practices including OSHA requirements;

e. excellent technical and grammatical writing skills and reading comprehension;

f. familiarity with MS Office, Photoshop Elements, ArcGIS, and topographic map software;

g. Trimble GPS equipment; and

h. Drafting, drawing and knowledge of maps, mapping techniques and map reading.

The Rocky Mountain Divisional office of Cultural Resource Analysts, Inc. (CRA) is seeking a full time staff archaeologist. This is a salaried position in a growing office and the preferred candidate will have at minimum a Bachelor Degree in Anthropology, a Masters Degree would be preferred, and have previously been listed on a Wyoming BLM permit as a field director.  Listing on additional permits is plus. All candidates must have experience leading crews on pedestrian inventory and be able to hike with a field pack 8-10 miles a day over steep uneven terrain. Demonstrable writing experience and familiarity with crew management, Trimble GPS units, IPads, Microsoft Word and Excel would be ideal. The office is based in Sheridan, Wyoming at the foot of the Bighorn Mountains, and work will primarily be across Wyoming, but will also include the surrounding states allowing the opportunity to expand personal archaeological and regulatory knowledge. Pay will be commensurate with experience and will be competitive with the local market. Out of town work generally includes single occupancy hotel rooms plus daily food allowance.

Binghamton University's Division of Research seeks a Director for the University's Public Archaeology Facility (PAF), a campus-designated Organized Research Center. PAF is an archaeological research center that specializes in all dimensions of cultural resource management (CRM) within the Northeastern U.S., mainly in New York and Pennsylvania. Established in 1972, PAF's grants and contracts support 25 employees (project managers, field/lab technicians, and administrative personnel) within the University's Division of Research. Our staff provides federal, state, local, and private groups within the Northeastern US with professional archaeological surveys in compliance with state and federal regulations. Our grants and contracts generate scholarly research that enhances the professional visibility of our staff, faculty, students, and university within the local community, region, and nation. We train archaeologists (undergraduates and graduates) to be field and research specialists within a CRM context. Our staff implements "Public Archaeology" through community programs, Native American collaborations, and preservation initiatives.

The successful candidate will be expected to be a strong cultural resource management (CRM) professional with demonstrated experience in managing all operations associated with a thriving CRM research center within a University setting. The person selected will be collegial and have a record of working collaboratively with an established professional staff of archaeologists and administrative staff. This is a full-time research management position. The successful candidate will be expected to have a strong research focus (preferably within the Northeast or Middle Atlantic), and be capable of advancing the education, research, and outreach mission of PAF and Binghamton University.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Aggressively pursue cultural resource management (and related) contract RFPs and grants in the Northeast, particularly in New York and Pennsylvania
  • Strive to maintain and grow external funding for PAF activities
  • Serve as the Principal Investigator (PI) or Co-PI on a diverse range of cultural resource (and related) grants and contracts
  • Supervise a senior staff of 12 project directors and administrative staff
  • Review and edit reports generated by senior staff and contribute to complex reports to ensure compliance with federal and state historic preservation laws and regulations
  • Serve as the primary point of contact with clients, reviewing agencies, and consulting parties to determine the effects of their undertakings on proposed projects and achieve consensus paths forward

  • Support and participate in PAF's successful Community Archaeology Program (CAP) and seek opportunities to be active in other community outreach initiatives

Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD in Anthropology, specialization in North American Archaeology (preferably within the Northeast and/or Middle Atlantic)
  • Three to five years' management experience in a cultural resources management facility, branch office, or a multi-staff research program
  • A minimum of five years in the field of Cultural Resource Management in the United States (strong preference will be given to a Northeast or Middle Atlantic focus)
  • A record of successful proposal development in response to RFP's, including writing scopes of work, creating responsive schedules, and preparation of competitive budgets
  • Extensive experience with federal and state historic preservation legislation as well as familiarity with NAGPRA and respectful Native American consultation
  • A record of archaeological research

Additional Preferred Skills and Qualifications

  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with clients, agencies, colleagues, and academic administrative offices
  • Strong writing and editing skills
  • Ability to ensure effective conclusion of projects in compliance with contract requirements
  • Ability to work well under pressure, and manage multiple tasks and priorities in order to complete concurrent projects within assigned budgets and schedules

DUKE CRM is seeking an experienced and qualified archaeologist to manage our field operations. This is a full-time, hourly position. DESCRIPTION
We are seeking an experienced and motivated Cultural Resources Director to lead our cultural resources group, currently ten staff. This is a full-time position, based in one of EcoPlan’s two Arizona offices (Mesa or Tucson).  The successful candidate will possess an advanced degree (M.A., M.S., PH.D.) in Archaeology, Anthropology, Historic Preservation, Architectural History, Historic Architecture, Cultural Resources Management, or closely related discipline per the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards and will have a minimum of 10 years of professional experience in the management of cultural resources in the private and/or agency sectors. The ideal candidate will possess strong organizational, interpersonal, technical writing, and business management skills.
Responsibilities include preparation of technical and cost proposals; planning, coordination, and oversight of archaeological field surveys; development, implementation, and oversight of treatment (testing/data recovery) plans; report preparation; and technical/quality control reviews. The Cultural Resources Director will be responsible for finding and winning work, managing projects, mentoring and managing staff, and growing our cultural resource services.
The Cultural Resources Director’s duties will include but are not limited to the following:
  • Grow and manage a diverse staff of cultural resources professionals
  • Establish and grow market presence through marketing and business development

PROFESSIONAL REQUIREMENTS

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

The Archaeological Crew Chief functions as a Project Lead for archaeological field research projects conducted by the Cultural Resources Management Program for the Gila River Indian Community.  This position supervises aspects of the archaeological survey and excavation projects under the direction of the Archaeological Field Supervisor.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Assist in supervising archaeological fieldwork including surveys, mapping and excavation of prehistoric and historic sites.
• Supervise the completion of field paperwork including site forms and excavation summaries.
• Assist in preparing work schedules and project reports.
• Assist in supervising and providing training in basic archaeological field techniques for field staff.
• Assist in maintaining a complete inventory of archaeological field equipment.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY:

• Knowledge of HuHuKam and/or Southwest Archaeology.
• Knowledge of prehistoric and historic artifacts.
• Ability to carry out archaeological survey and excavation methods occasionally carrying field instruments and equipment. [Field conditions may consist of extreme temperatures, rugged desert, and mountainous terrain with dangerous plants and wildlife.]
• Ability to complete relevant field forms, track specimen numbers/forms/artifact bags, undertake trench profiling and feature excavations and documentation.
