Binghamton University's Division of Research seeks a Director for the University's Public Archaeology Facility (PAF), a campus-designated Organized Research Center. PAF is an archaeological research center that specializes in all dimensions of cultural resource management (CRM) within the Northeastern U.S., mainly in New York and Pennsylvania. Established in 1972, PAF's grants and contracts support 25 employees (project managers, field/lab technicians, and administrative personnel) within the University's Division of Research. Our staff provides federal, state, local, and private groups within the Northeastern US with professional archaeological surveys in compliance with state and federal regulations. Our grants and contracts generate scholarly research that enhances the professional visibility of our staff, faculty, students, and university within the local community, region, and nation. We train archaeologists (undergraduates and graduates) to be field and research specialists within a CRM context. Our staff implements "Public Archaeology" through community programs, Native American collaborations, and preservation initiatives.

The successful candidate will be expected to be a strong cultural resource management (CRM) professional with demonstrated experience in managing all operations associated with a thriving CRM research center within a University setting. The person selected will be collegial and have a record of working collaboratively with an established professional staff of archaeologists and administrative staff. This is a full-time research management position. The successful candidate will be expected to have a strong research focus (preferably within the Northeast or Middle Atlantic), and be capable of advancing the education, research, and outreach mission of PAF and Binghamton University.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Aggressively pursue cultural resource management (and related) contract RFPs and grants in the Northeast, particularly in New York and Pennsylvania
  • Strive to maintain and grow external funding for PAF activities
  • Serve as the Principal Investigator (PI) or Co-PI on a diverse range of cultural resource (and related) grants and contracts
  • Supervise a senior staff of 12 project directors and administrative staff
  • Review and edit reports generated by senior staff and contribute to complex reports to ensure compliance with federal and state historic preservation laws and regulations
  • Serve as the primary point of contact with clients, reviewing agencies, and consulting parties to determine the effects of their undertakings on proposed projects and achieve consensus paths forward
  • Work collaboratively with PAF administrative staff to efficiently implement projects and adhere to contract clauses, budgets, and schedules
  • Conduct research that supports and contributes to an active research program in Northeastern archaeology (preferably in New York and Pennsylvania)
  • Author and co-author papers on PAF research for presentation at regional and national professional meetings, and pursue opportunities for publication
  • Participate in New York State professional organizations, such as the New York Archaeological Council (NYAC) and play an active role in shaping preservation policies and procedures in the State
  • Provide analytical support and technical assistance to senior staff
  • Support and participate in PAF's successful Community Archaeology Program (CAP) and seek opportunities to be active in other community outreach initiatives
  • Coordinate Binghamton university's compliance with the federal Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA)
  • Work with the Anthropology Department's Master of Arts in Public Archaeology (MAPA) Program to help recruit, find research internship opportunities, and promote growth of the program
  • Collaborate with the Environmental Studies Program on opportunities for PAF participation in geophysical projects

 


Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications

  • PhD in Anthropology, specialization in North American Archaeology (preferably within the Northeast and/or Middle Atlantic)
  • Three to five years' experience managing a cultural resource management facility, branch office, or a multi-staff research program
  • A minimum of five years in the field of Cultural Resource Management in the United States (strong preference will be given to a Northeast or Middle Atlantic focus)
  • A record of successful proposal development in response to RFP's, including writing scopes of work, creating responsive schedules, and preparation of competitive budgets
  • Extensive experience with federal and state historic preservation legislation as well as familiarity with NAGPRA and respectful Native American consultation
  • A record of archaeological research

Additional Preferred Skills and Qualifications

  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing with clients, agencies, colleagues, and academic administrative offices
  • Strong writing and editing skills
  • Ability to ensure effective conclusion of projects in compliance with contract requirements
  • Ability to work well under pressure, and manage multiple tasks and priorities in order to complete concurrent projects within assigned budgets and schedules
  • Mentoring skills applied to a range of personnel as well as students working towards degrees within departmental master's and doctoral programs

Statistical Research, Inc. (SRI), a multidisciplinary cultural resources consulting firm, has multiple temporary, full-time, and hourly positions available for archaeological Field Technicians headquartered from SRI’s Tucson office. Qualified candidates should possess, at minimum, a bachelor’s degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or a related field and have completed an accredited archaeological field school. Candidates must also have a minimum of 1–2 years of field experience (i.e., survey, testing, and data recovery) and be physically fit and able to perform physically demanding tasks in adverse environmental conditions (i.e., extreme heat or cold). Candidates should also have good communication and organizational skills, a positive attitude, strong work ethic, and willingness to learn and execute new tasks. Prior experience concerning the history and archaeology of southern Arizona is preferred, as is demonstrated past field experience working with Trimble Global Positioning System (GPS) receivers. Initial tasking will include an approximately 3-month-long survey on the Barry M. Goldwater Range West (BMGRW) near Yuma, Arizona.

 

Base rate of pay will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. When working on SCA-eligible jobs, the appropriate wage-determination rate plus health and welfare rate will apply.  For the above referenced BMGRW survey project, the fieldwork will be conducted in Yuma County, Arizona. The Yuma County rate is $17.97 plus $4.48 for health and welfare, for a total rate of $22.45 per hour. Food allowance and single-occupancy lodging will be provided for fieldwork requiring an overnight stay. Transportation to and from the SRI Tucson Office and the project area will be provided.

 

Job Description:

 

Reporting to the Project Director or Crew Chief, archaeological field technicians are responsible for conducting survey, the establishment of grids, artifact collection, test unit and feature excavation, and documentation. To this end, and in accordance with SRI conventions and project requirements, archaeological field technicians are required to perform the following tasks in the field:

 

·        Conduct archaeological survey, testing, and data recovery

·        Identify, manually excavate, and document archaeological features in plan and profile

·        Complete field forms accurately and concisely

·        Properly label collection bags and samples

·        Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds and to work in intensely arid, hot conditions

 

The BMGR West fieldwork is ongoing and is anticipated to last into May. Follow-on BMGRW fieldwork should be anticipated.

Job Summary

The Central Midwest Area Cultural Resource Division of AECOM is actively seeking a creative, highly talented Archaeological Technician for temporary employment with our Louisiana office. However, the candidate could be working on various projects in the Upper Mid-West, or elsewhere on the Great Plains, including surveys, evaluative testing and data recovery projects, depending on staffing needs throughout the Central Region. This is a part-time variable position, meaning, work days and times will be determined on an as-needed basis.

In most cases, this position reports to the Field Director or Archaeological Supervisor.

Responsibilities for this position include but are not limited to:

  • Conducting archaeological survey, shovel testing, investigations/excavations; screening and describing soil deposits.
  • Documenting archaeological and historic resources. Must be able to learn to take accurate field notes; draw accurate profiles and plan view sketches
  • In time, the position may also require completing site forms, narrative site descriptions, and written contributions to reports.
  • Using a digital camera to photo-document artifacts, features, and sites and keeping an accurate photo log.
  • Processing artifacts (wash, mark and catalog) and performing basic analysis of artifacts
  • Consulting with supervisor concerning unusual problems and developments

Minimum Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent

The Rocky Mountain Divisional office of Cultural Resource Analysts, Inc. is seeking seasonal crew chiefs and field technicians for multiple inventory projects in Colorado and Wyoming, and surrounding states.

 

Crew chiefs applying must be able to be permitted by the BLM in Colorado and/or Wyoming. Previously permitted individuals will be given precedent for crew chief positions. Additional office work associated with these positions may extend into the fall.

 

Fieldwork will begin in late May/early June and will continue for several months. A bachelor’s degree or higher and demonstrated Class III inventory experience are required. All candidates must be able to hike with a field pack 8-10 miles a day over steep uneven terrain. The ideal candidate will have experience working independently and amongst team members. They will also have experience with and be familiar with operating Trimble GPS units as well as Garmin GPS units and basic digital cameras. These projects will be based out of small towns with limited resources, so be prepared.

 

Pay will be commensurate with experience and will be competitive with the local market.  Overtime pay will be paid at time and half over 40 hours a week. CRAI will provide single occupancy housing and $51 a day per diem while in the field for most projects. These positions are temporary, but employees who excel in their work will be considered for continuing work after the field season.

• Must demonstrate completion, at a PI level, of a minimum of three or more substantial projects involving primarily archaeological investigations and preparation of final reports consistent with the Secretary of the Interior's Standards and Guidelines for Archeology and Historic Preservation. Projects shall have been performed under the jurisdiction of the National Historic Preservation Act. Previous experience at the PI-level on at least one, substantial linear survey is preferred. "Substantial" projects include:
Intensive-level survey of at least 1,000 acres resulting in recording and eligibility and management recommendations for up to 10 sites, and/or;
Archaeological data recovery or other sufficiently complex field effort to minimize or mitigate adverse effects to archaeological resources
• Emphasis in Great Basin or Colorado Plateau archaeology required; a current technical specialization (i.e. lithic analysis, historical archaeology, GIS, architectural history, etc.) is preferred
• Experience with NEPA and NHPA Section 106 required; experience with Utah State Code 9-8-404 preferred
• Listing as a Registered Professional Archaeologist or ability ot be listed is required
• Past peer-reviewed publication record and conference presentation experience preferred
• Must be able to obtain or have already obtained a PI permit in Utah and be able to be listed on statewide agency (especially BLM) permits for Utah is required; ability to be listed on various federal and state cultural resource permits in other states, especially Nevada, is preferred

Overview


SWCA Environmental Consultants is looking for multiple Archaeological Field Technicians to join our Texas / Gulf Coast Region (Arlington, Austin, Baton Rouge, Houston, San Antonio). The Texas Gulf Coast offices offer an exciting work environment with field projects all over the State of Texas and the surrounding region.

Your role will be to assist with field work on a variety of renewable energy, oil and gas, energy transmission, transportation, and land development projects. You should be able to work outside and travel. Compensation is based on experience and qualifications.



Responsibilities

• Conduct archaeological field work including monitoring, survey, testing, and data recovery.
• Identify historic and prehistoric artifacts accurately.
• Complete sketch maps of archaeological sites / historic resources.
• Complete field forms efficiently and correctly.
• Photograph cultural resources.
• Use sub-meter GPS devices and tablets.

Qualifications

• A Bachelor's Degree in anthropology, archaeology, or a closely related field
• Have completed an accredited field school
• Six (6) months field experience with a range of field methodologies, including survey, testing, excavation, and monitoring is preferred
• Ability to work well in a team-based environment
• Able to maintain a positive attitude while working in adverse conditions
• Ability to travel to a location, walk and conduct fieldwork for long hours, sometimes in inclement weather, rugged terrain, often at high altitudes, and the ability to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds is required
• Willing to travel overnight for an extended period of time
• Knowledge of TerraSync or ArcGIS Collector is a plus
• Current valid driver's license
• The ability to safely operate a four-wheel-drive vehicle on rugged, backcountry roads is a plus

Overview

SWCA Environmental Consultants' Salt Lake City-based cultural resources program is expanding their archaeology field leadership team and looking for dynamic individuals to assist in delivering the highest-quality data to support multiple projects this field season.

Your role will be to lead archaeological survey crews as part of a larger field execution team on project work. You should be able to work full-time while

weather permits.



Responsibilities

Leading a crew while conducting archaeological fieldwork - primarily survey. Communicating with Field Directors, Project Managers, and GIS staff through regular, scheduled field status reports. Assisting with mapping responsibilities in the field, including collection of GPS data using professional-grade devices. This is a field position requiring travel and extensive time away from home though minimal office and laboratory work may also be required.

 

Qualifications

• Minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in Anthropology, Archaeology or a closely related field required
• A minimum of two (2) years of experience with a wide range of field methodologies, especially archaeological survey and excavation, is required
• Previous field supervisory experience required
• Previous experience recording archaeological sites on the Utah Archaeological Site Form or IMACS is required
• Experience in the Great Basin and Colorado Plateau sufficient to be listed on federal and state cultural resource permits in Utah is required; adequate experience to be listed on permits in Nevada is preferred
• Ability to travel to a location, walk and conduct fieldwork for long hours, sometimes in inclement weather, rugged terrain, often at high altitudes, and ability to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds is required; a pace of 8 to 10 miles per day is expected
• Knowledge of professional-grade GPS is required; experience with tablet-based data applications is a plus
• Strong outdoor skills including wayfinding, camping, first aid, basic survival training, etc are preferred
• Current valid driver's license and the ability to safely operate a 4wd vehicle on rugged, backcountry roads required.

Your role will be to lead the technical component of archaeological projects to ensure scientific rigor and regulatory sufficiency as part of a larger project management team, or in managing your own projects, as assigned. You will also be expected to play a leadership role in the program including mentoring junior staff, encouraging teamwork and cooperation, and driving overall scientific and business excellence.



Responsibilities

Oversee all aspects of field research, data collection, inventory, analysis, and final report production to ensure compliance with SWCA's high quality standards for technical work, agency requirements and guidelines, and general standards of scientific quality. Additional project management duties as needed: manage budgets, prepare proposals, interact with clients, and manage staff. As needed, author large technical reports, research designs, treatment plans and other technical documents. Maintain good working relationships with state and federal agency contacts and clients following relevant work protocols.

 

Qualifications

• Minimum of a Master's degree in Archaeology or Anthropology required; PhD preferred
• Minimum of five (5) years of supervisory and fieldwork experience required
• Must demonstrate completion, at a PI level, of a minimum of three or more substantial projects involving primarily archaeological investigations and preparation of final reports consistent with the Secretary of the Interior's Standards and Guidelines for Archeology and Historic Preservation. Projects shall have been performed under the jurisdiction of the National Historic Preservation Act. Previous experience at the PI-level on at least one, substantial linear survey is preferred. "Substantial" projects include:
Intensive-level survey of at least 1,000 acres resulting in recording and eligibility and management recommendations for up to 10 sites, and/or;
Archaeological data recovery or other sufficiently complex field effort to minimize or mitigate adverse effects to archaeological resources
• Emphasis in Great Basin or Colorado Plateau archaeology required; a current technical specialization (i.e. lithic analysis, historical archaeology, GIS, architectural history, etc.) is preferred
• Experience with NEPA and NHPA Section 106 required; experience with Utah State Code 9-8-404 preferred
• Listing as a Registered Professional Archaeologist or ability ot be listed is required
• Past peer-reviewed publication record and conference presentation experience preferred
• Must be able to obtain or have already obtained a PI permit in Utah and be able to be listed on statewide agency (especially BLM) permits for Utah is required; ability to be listed on various federal and state cultural resource permits in other states, especially Nevada, is preferred
