The Cultural Resource Management (CRM) Publications Individual Placement is based in Washington, D.C. with the National Park Service. This 6-month AmeriCorps position will work to provide CRM-related support to the parks and partners in the National Capital Region through the development of reports and communications materials. The Individual Placement (IP) will primarily work on office-based assignments under the mentorship and support of the NPS Staff. The reports created by the IP will provide park resource managers with guidance and information that support caretaking of National Park cultural resources including historic structures and cultural landscapes. The IP may also catalog and otherwise improve access to cultural resource reports and related products that were produced by and for the National Parks of the National Capital Region. 

In addition, the IPs will be encouraged to attend NPS-sponsored trainings, and to take part in the activities of other resource programs.  

The AmeriCorps Intern will receive a $500 per week living stipend. Housing is not provided. This position will also be eligible for an education award based on the length of the service term.

To qualify, you must be between the ages of 18 and 30, and a US citizen that has received a high school diploma or GED. Position Overview

Cultural Resource Technicians assist in the identification, evaluation, and treatment of cultural resources.  Technicians are responsible for applying technical skills in archaeology to assist project managers and senior level staff with all tasks related to fieldwork and reporting in the cultural resources department.  This is primarily a field position and is seasonal, fieldwork could occur anywhere in Colorado.  Applicants for this position are expected to be physically capable of performing fieldwork tasks associated with survey, testing, and excavation.  Employment may be extended beyond the field season if mutually agreeable.

Minimum Education and Experience

·     Bachelor’s degree in anthropology or related social science field

·     An accredited field school certification is preferred

·     3 months of applicable experience, with preference for Colorado-based experience.

Physical Requirements

The project areas may be located at high elevations in rugged terrain.  Applicants must be physically capable and possess the skills necessary to perform all aspects of fieldwork including miles of strenuous hiking with a backpack in rugged terrain, collecting digital data, completing standard resource forms, performing in-field artifact analysis, and photography.

Performance Expectations and Responsibilities

Cultural Resource Technicians will conduct these tasks safely, independently, and efficiently under the immediate supervision of a crew chief, field director, or project manager.  Must be able to work variable hours, long days, early mornings, holidays, and weekends as the work dictates.  Overtime is possible and will be compensated at time and a half.

Expected Field Duties

  • Support crew chief, field director, or project manager with all requested field tasks
  • Follow Safety Plan and guidelines
  • Drive company vehicle to project site, sometimes in 4WD situations
  • Collect digital and spatial data with tablets, digital cameras, and GPS
  • Complete digital or hard copy field forms: state site forms and artifact analysis forms
  • Hike and survey with a backpack in rugged terrain
  • Assist with testing, including excavation of 8 or more shovel tests in a single day using hand tools, shovels, lifting 50 pound buckets, and screening. 
  • Record accurate, detailed notes, digital photography, and mapping.

The Mannik & Smith Group, Inc. (MSG) has 2-3 immediate openings on a Phase III data recovery project in Detroit, Michigan. The project site is a cluster of late 19th to mid-20th century residential sites. Work involves excavation of 1x1 meter units in former yard areas and inside building foundations, including shoveling, troweling, and mapping. Fieldwork is expected to last through September 27. Work days are 8 hours a day, Monday-Friday. Some longer work days may be required if weather intervenes.

 

Pay will be $15.00/hour for first-time MSG hires. Field technicians will be provided with single-occupancy hotel rooms for the duration of the project (including over weekends), and $46 per diem.

Logan Simpson, an expanding environmental planning, cultural resources, and landscape architectural design firm, currently seeks a full-time Archaeological Field Director to work out of our Eugene, Oregon office.

 

Qualifications include possessing or the ability to obtain current permits with a variety of public land managing agencies, with an emphasis on Oregon and Washington. Must have experience supervising personnel in both western and eastern Oregon and Washington, producing technical reports and site forms, preparing National Register evaluations, and working as part of a team. Duties and responsibilities include conducting and supervising field work, producing technical reports and site forms, preparing National Register evaluations, coordinating logistics and schedules, and assisting Project Managers and Principal Investigators.

 

Candidates should be familiar with the completion of survey and excavation forms, Oregon and Washington site forms, operating GPS units with a data recorder, and conducting quality control/quality assurance reviews of data. The ideal candidate will possess knowledge of federal cultural resources regulations, the ability to coordinate and communicate with agencies and clients, and manage budgets and schedules.

 

Capability of supervising cultural resources survey and other archaeological projects in remote locations and over challenging terrain, a clean driving record, and the ability to work out-of-town are also essential. A proven research interest in the region is a plus.

 

Requirements include:

 

·         Master’s degree in Anthropology or closely related field or equivalent experience;

·         Permittable in Oregon and Washington states;

·         4+ years of archaeology consulting or agency experience;

·         Proficiency with technical writing and Microsoft Office products;

·         Ability to demonstrate written and verbal communication skills, and demonstrable experience independently preparing complex technical documents for a full range of various cultural resources projects;

·         Capability of conducting and supervising cultural resources surveys in a variety of challenging terrain and conditions, including steep slopes, heavily vegetated areas with deadfall, and rugged, mountainous geography.

Responsibilities:

• The candidate must be able to carry out the duties of a mid/senior archaeologist supporting the Principal Investigator during cultural resource undertakings
• Potential field work includes pedestrian survey, STP survey, monitoring, evaluative testing, and site mitigation
• Field work tasks can include leading a field crew, meeting with agency representatives in the field, and working with other environmental groups within Tetra Tech 
• For field work, the candidate must be able to walk up to 10-12 miles per day carrying up to 25 lbs. of personal and project equipment 
• Field work is estimated to be at least 50 percent of the expected duties

Requirements:

• Master’s degree in Anthropology/Archaeology with a concentration in North American Archaeology. 
• The candidate must have at least 3 to 5 years of cultural resource management experience in the Intermountain West, Great Basin, Southwest, Midwest, or Pacific Northwest of the United States
• The candidate must qualify as at least a field supervisor for inclusion on State, Bureau of Land Management and US Forest Service cultural resource permits on one or more of the permitted states in which the Golden office operates: Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming, Nevada, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, North Dakota 
• GIS skills are a plus
• Exhibit solid, practical skills in Microsoft Office applications (spreadsheet (Excel), word processing (Word 
• The ability to handle multiple tasks, coordinate effectively with others, and work independently within a team are important characteristics for this position
• Must be able to research and interpret federal, state and local regulations on a project-specific basis to assess project permitting feasibility and requirements, and interface with regulatory agencies
• Must be able to coordinate and lead the preparation of proposals, as well as write an acceptable cultural resource report
• Technical inquisitiveness, a positive attitude, and an ability to work well in teams are essential
• Open communicator who is not afraid to discuss the project with clients, staff, or land owners

Logan Simpson, an environmental planning, cultural resources, and landscape architectural design firm, is looking for a GIS Technician to work in our Salt Lake City, Utah office – supporting the regional Cultural Resources Group.

 

The ideal candidate will have basic technical experience in using ArcGIS Desktop to prepare GIS end products. Additionally they will have knowledge of basic cartographic practices and standards. Current or recent graduate students in a MA program in GIS are preferred. This position will be a temporary, part-time addition to our Geospatial Team supporting archaeological survey efforts throughout the Intermountain Southwest.

 

Required Qualifications: 

·         Bachelor’s degree in Geography, Geographical Information Systems, Anthropology, or a graduate GIS certificate.

·         1 year minimum relevant experience.
