R. Christopher Goodwin & Associates, Inc. announces immediate openings for field archaeologists for a project in southeastern New Mexico. These are salaried, temporary positions expected to last between 1 – 3 months. Upon completion of this project, and based on merit and pending work load, full-time permanent positions may be offered to successful applicants. Future work will potentially be throughout New Mexico and the Greater Southwest. Travel, sometimes for extended periods, may be required. Such positions include paid holidays; health and dental insurance; annual leave; and 401(k) program. Salary is competitive and commensurate with educational and professional experience.
1. Minimum requirements for all applicants are:
a. completion of (1) a B.A. or B.S. degree in Anthropology from an accredited university and (2) a university—accredited field school.
b. Prior experience in the Southwest is required. Experience in southeastern New Mexico is desirable. Three references are required of all applicants. University transcripts may be requested.
c. This position will require time in the field on surveys in rugged high elevation settings, sometimes in challenging weather conditions, and requires traversing long-distances across challenging terrain on a daily basis.
d. Occasional office work and other duties as assigned may also be required.
e. Successful applicants will be able to pass a background check and obtain basic clearance for access to DoD installations such as White Sands Missile Range or Fort Bliss.
 
Successful applicants will have familiarity with hand-held GPS data collection, basic archeological methods and survey standards, and be willing to be part of an exciting team-oriented work culture. Familiarity with both historic and prehistoric sites/artifacts common to the Southwest is preferred.

One year demonstrated experience in Cultural Resource Management (CRM) archaeological survey is required. Experience in Phase II testing, and excavation, while not required, is a plus. The applicant should have the ability to compile detailed field notes, and operate a hand held GPS for navigation and mapping, as well as the ability to work in difficult or remote environments in varying weather conditions. The Cultural Resource Management (CRM) Publications Individual Placement is based in Washington, D.C. with the National Park Service. This 6-month AmeriCorps position will work to provide CRM-related support to the parks and partners in the National Capital Region through the development of reports and communications materials. The Individual Placement (IP) will primarily work on office-based assignments under the mentorship and support of the NPS Staff. The reports created by the IP will provide park resource managers with guidance and information that support caretaking of National Park cultural resources including historic structures and cultural landscapes. The IP may also catalog and otherwise improve access to cultural resource reports and related products that were produced by and for the National Parks of the National Capital Region. 

In addition, the IPs will be encouraged to attend NPS-sponsored trainings, and to take part in the activities of other resource programs.  

The AmeriCorps Intern will receive a $500 per week living stipend. Housing is not provided. This position will also be eligible for an education award based on the length of the service term.

Position Overview

Cultural Resource Technicians assist in the identification, evaluation, and treatment of cultural resources.  Technicians are responsible for applying technical skills in archaeology to assist project managers and senior level staff with all tasks related to fieldwork and reporting in the cultural resources department.  This is primarily a field position and is seasonal, fieldwork could occur anywhere in Colorado.  Applicants for this position are expected to be physically capable of performing fieldwork tasks associated with survey, testing, and excavation.  Employment may be extended beyond the field season if mutually agreeable.

Minimum Education and Experience

·     Bachelor’s degree in anthropology or related social science field

·     An accredited field school certification is preferred

·     3 months of applicable experience, with preference for Colorado-based experience.

Physical Requirements

The project areas may be located at high elevations in rugged terrain.  Applicants must be physically capable and possess the skills necessary to perform all aspects of fieldwork including miles of strenuous hiking with a backpack in rugged terrain, collecting digital data, completing standard resource forms, performing in-field artifact analysis, and photography.

Performance Expectations and Responsibilities

Cultural Resource Technicians will conduct these tasks safely, independently, and efficiently under the immediate supervision of a crew chief, field director, or project manager.  Must be able to work variable hours, long days, early mornings, holidays, and weekends as the work dictates.  Overtime is possible and will be compensated at time and a half.

  • Support crew chief, field director, or project manager with all requested field tasks
  • Follow Safety Plan and guidelines
  • Drive company vehicle to project site, sometimes in 4WD situations
  • Collect digital and spatial data with tablets, digital cameras, and GPS

The project site is a cluster of late 19th to mid-20th century residential sites. Work involves excavation of 1x1 meter units in former yard areas and inside building foundations, including shoveling, troweling, and mapping. Fieldwork is expected to last through September 27. Work days are 8 hours a day, Monday-Friday. Some longer work days may be required if weather intervenes.

 

Pay will be $15.00/hour for first-time MSG hires. Field technicians will be provided with single-occupancy hotel rooms for the duration of the project (including over weekends), and $46 per diem.

The first Phase II project is scheduled to start October 2. The work schedule will consist of ten (10) consecutive work days and will end on October 11. SWCA Environmental Consultants has an opening for an Archaeological Field Technician to work on projects on the island of Maui, as well as other Hawaiian Islands as needed. The individual selected must live on Maui. The position is temporary, and work is dependent on project needs.

 

What you will accomplish

Successful applicants must be able to conduct archaeological fieldwork including survey, test excavation, data recovery, and monitoring.

 

Experience and qualifications for success

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in anthropology, archaeology, or a closely related field or six (6) months archaeological field experience.
  • Must live on the island of Maui.
  • An accredited Field School Certification is preferred.
  • Experience with a wide range of field methodologies, including archaeological survey, test excavation, and monitoring.
  • Hawaii field experience preferred.
  • Current valid driver’s license and the ability to safely operate a 4wd vehicle on rugged, back country roads.
  • Ability to travel to a location, walk, and conduct fieldwork for long hours, sometimes in inclement weather, rugged terrain, often at high altitudes, and the ability to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds.

Archaeological Monitor, $25/hour, Estimated 15 months of monitoring

Archaeological Field Director

Logan Simpson, an expanding environmental planning, cultural resources, and landscape architectural design firm, currently seeks a full-time Archaeological Field Director to work out of our Eugene, Oregon office.

 

Qualifications include possessing or the ability to obtain current permits with a variety of public land managing agencies, with an emphasis on Oregon and Washington. Must have experience supervising personnel in both western and eastern Oregon and Washington, producing technical reports and site forms, preparing National Register evaluations, and working as part of a team. Duties and responsibilities include conducting and supervising field work, producing technical reports and site forms, preparing National Register evaluations, coordinating logistics and schedules, and assisting Project Managers and Principal Investigators.

 

Candidates should be familiar with the completion of survey and excavation forms, Oregon and Washington site forms, operating GPS units with a data recorder, and conducting quality control/quality assurance reviews of data. The ideal candidate will possess knowledge of federal cultural resources regulations, the ability to coordinate and communicate with agencies and clients, and manage budgets and schedules.

 

Capability of supervising cultural resources survey and other archaeological projects in remote locations and over challenging terrain, a clean driving record, and the ability to work out-of-town are also essential. A proven research interest in the region is a plus.

 

Requirements include:

 

·         Master’s degree in Anthropology or closely related field or equivalent experience;

·         Permittable in Oregon and Washington states;

·         4+ years of archaeology consulting or agency experience;

·         Proficiency with technical writing and Microsoft Office products;

·         Ability to demonstrate written and verbal communication skills, and demonstrable experience independently preparing complex technical documents for a full range of various cultural resources projects;

·         Capability of conducting and supervising cultural resources surveys in a variety of challenging terrain and conditions, including steep slopes, heavily vegetated areas with deadfall, and rugged, mountainous geography.
