Position Summary

Quality Services, Inc., Rapid City, South Dakota, is seeking a Secretary of the Interior standards qualified principal investigator Architectural Historian.  The position involves historic structures survey, National Register of Historic Places and analysis, directing field surveys and research tasks, writing Section 106 reports including determinations of eligibility and effects, historic context studies, Memoranda of Agreement, and HABS/HAER documentation.  Applicants may be required to walk in rough terrain, carry up to 40 lbs., and deal with variable and inclement weather conditions, be able to sit, stoop, bend, and climb, and to use hand tools, shovels and screening and other field equipment.

 

Minimum Requirements

·                     Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in architectural history, history, historic preservation,

              American studies, or a related discipline.

·                      One to three years of experience in architectural history and historic preservation.

·                     Knowledge of Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act and the necessary                     

              regulatory steps as it applies to historic properties

·                     Ability to direct/conduct architectural history field surveys and focused architectural research

 

Preferred Qualifications

·                     Master’s degree in architectural history, history, historic preservation, American studies, or           

              related discipline

·                     Ability to interact with project managers, clients, and review agencies in a professional

              consulting environment

·                     Ability to manage multiple projects effectively and professionally with limited oversight

·                     HABS/HAER experience

·                     Experience in preparation of National Register of Historic Places structure nominations

·                     SHPO review experience

Quality Services, Inc. is seeking an experienced cultural resource management specialist/ archeologist for the position of Principal Investigator (PI). Qualified candidates will have a background in planning and managing projects and teams. Required tasks include conducting surveys, recording cultural resources, testing, or excavating archeological sites and areas with potential for buried archeological resources, analyzing artifacts and materials, consulting with state and federal agencies and tribes, writing and reviewing reports, and customer service.

 

Quality Services, Inc. is a small business based in the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota that deals with multiple types of clients and projects in all sizes. We work in over 30 states in support of a variety of industries, services, government agencies, and clients, completing over 700 projects per year.   • Experience in conducting pedestrian field survey using Trimble GPS and/or Fulcrum Smartphone technology in addition to illustrating site sketch maps and features accurately.   
  • Experience identifying prehistoric and historic artifact classes and materials and faunal remains,  
  • Have a sound knowledge of soils, geomorphology and how to describe them.  
  • Experience in conducting test excavations and data recovery projects, and completing California DPR forms accurately, succinctly; and quickly in the field using Aspen apps.  
  • Successful candidates must have the ability to maintain high quality field notes, keep good organization of field records, and maintain a professional demeanor in a variety of often strenuous outdoor and remote environmental work conditions.  
  • Experience with ESRI or Adobe Creative Cloud and/or Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint) a big plus.  
  • Successful candidates must have a valid CA Driver’s License with a clean driving record and be comfortable working in strenuous hiking and harsh weather conditions.

Overview

experience. Experience in Tennessee is desirable. The qualified candidate must have a graduate

degree in Anthropology and a minimum of 2-3 years of experience conducting archaeological

survey. Candidate must meet the Secretary of the Interior Standards (36 CFR 61) in archaeology,

and should have demonstrated skills in CRM, including supervisory experience on Phase I

projects. The candidate will be expected to direct and manage phase I surveys for clients in both

the public and private sectors, including multiple projects at a time. Expect frequent stays away

from the office. Specific duties include managing field crews, conduct analyses, interpret

analytical data, and write reports. The ability to write clearly and professionally is very

important. Familiarity with the use of GPS units is expected. The candidate needs to be detail

oriented and have excellent verbal and written communication skills, strong organizational skills,

and must be technologically proficient including experience with databases. It is imperative that

    Education and Experience. Candidates must have either a B.A. degree in anthropology, or a Master’s degree in archaeology or cultural resources management. In both cases, the candidate must have at least three years of experience working with California prehistoric or historic-aged resources and be able to identify prehistoric and historic artifacts. Certification by the Register of Professional Archaeologists (RPA) is a plus, but not required. Candidates must also have a good understanding of culture history relevant to California. 
  • Successful candidates must have a valid CA Driver’s License with a clean driving record and be comfortable working in strenuous hiking and harsh weather conditions. 

The ideal candidate would be enthusiastic, highly motivated, attentive to fine details, well organized, and comfortable working remotely via cell phone app and email exchange. This candidate would be able to transport themselves to the work site and to Aspen’s office locations.

  • Interpret historical & archaeological materials to vast and different audiences

Education and Training Requirements

Minimum qualifications:

      • Bachelor’s degree in anthropology, education, or a related field (e.g., English, history, humanities)
  • Experience developing teaching and educational outreach materials
  • Experience working with the public

Preferred qualifications:

  • Graduate degree in anthropology, archaeology, education, history, public history, museum studies, public relations, communications, or the advantageous combination of two or more of these disciplines.
  • Experience with archaeological field work, lab work, and research methodologies are extremely desirable
  • Have very strong verbal and written communication skills, and must demonstrate experience and aptitude in dealing with various public audiences.

International Archaeological Research Institute, Inc. (IARII), a non-profit equal opportunity employer, seeks a temporary (3-4 months), full-time Archaeology Project Director/Bioarchaeologist for its Guam Office, with the potential to become permanent full-time. Must have at least two years of experience directing archaeology projects, conducting burial or data recovery, conducting inventory and analysis of human skeletal remains, and identifying isolated bone fragments. A graduate degree in anthropology with specialization in biological anthropology, bioarchaeology, or degree in a related field, and CRM experience required. Will need a U.S. passport and driver’s license. Pacific Islands experience preferred. Will conduct fieldwork and supervise archaeology crews, conduct burial recovery, write reports, oversee projects, and conduct laboratory analyses. Should have computer skills (Microsoft and Adobe software), experience using statistical software, basic GPS/GIS proficiency, a good sense of organization, problem-solving abilities, interpersonal skills, a strong determination to maintain project schedules, and a willingness to work as part of a team. Project work in Pacific Islands, primarily Micronesia. Incorporated in 2011, North Wind Resource Consulting’s core capabilities include environmental documentation and permitting; natural and cultural resource surveys; wildlife and botanical expertise; National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) technical services; historic and prehistoric surveys; environmental consultation such as Section 106 for cultural resources, Section 404 for wetlands, and Section 7 for endangered species); and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and mapping capabilities. Job Description 

The Archaeologist Field Director is a mid-level position that will be providing in-field analysis and scientific studies for projects located within the greater Phoenix area, and across Arizona. The Field Director should have a minimum of 5 years of demonstrated experience with Class III archaeological surveys, monitoring, or testing projects in the Southwest. Experience will include higher skill level with artifact identification, in-field documentation, and data collection. The position requires the applicant to possess site recording knowledge and proficiencies for accurately recording historic and prehistoric sites according to land agency specifications. Additional aspects of the Archaeologist Field Director position include: 

 

  • Leading field surveys for simple to complex projects with accurate information and data collection. 
  • Organizes fieldwork mobilization/demobilization. 
  • Works well with project members and maintains a high level of communication regarding status of work product. 
  • Assisting and mentoring crews of Archaeological Technicians in survey strategies, organization, artifact identification, data collection, following field protocols and safety practices. 
  • Requires participation in project kickoff meetings and project updates. 
  • Applicants will possess an understanding of following project budgets and the ability to communicate efficiencies and overages. 
  • Possesses 5-years of experience in Southwest archaeology and is familiar with agency’s site recording standards for Arizona. 
  • Lead activities including (a) collecting data using GPS units (i.e. Trimble, Garmin, and/or IOS Field Collector), (b) taking photographs of project area, project activities, and (c) artifact/feature identification. 
  • Possesses strong technical writing skills demonstrated in completion of Class I and Class III reports. 
  • Ensures that projects are completed on schedule and within budget. 
  • Driving daily to project areas in Arizona using North Wind vehicle. 
  • Maintaining both North Wind and project-specific safety awareness and practices at all times. 
  • Regular communication with North Wind Project Manager, field technicians and Line Supervisor. 
  • Participation in North Wind training. 

    Qualifications 
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field with a minimum of 3-5 years of experience. 
  • Possesses a strong work ethic with a developed and mature understanding of professionalism. 
  • Possesses strong technical writing skills demonstrated through completion of Class I and Class III reports. 
  • Willingness and desire to learn as well as ask questions. 
  • Ability to follow written and oral instruction. 
  • Displays excellent communication and interpersonal skills and attention to detail. 
  • Ability and willingness to travel to various field locations, walk and conduct fieldwork for long hours, across rugged terrain. 
  • Ability to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 40 pounds. 
  • Willingness to work irregular hours (e.g., early mornings, late nights, weekends). 
  • Willingness and ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic setting, and to consistently enact high performance standards and a strong work and team ethic in support of the goals and objectives of North Wind’s commitment to gathering high quality in-field data. 
  • Experience in and willingness to work in inclement conditions (i.e. very hot, windy, sunny without shade). 
  • Ability and willingness to travel to project area. 
  • Must pass pre-employment background check. 
  • Must pass pre-employment drug screening. 
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license with all necessary endorsements. 
  • Must be able, by reason of experience, training, or both, to operate a 4-wheel high clearance North Wind vehicle (i.e. truck and/or jeep) to complete the work task(s).

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
    This position requires long periods of walking, climbing, standing, stooping, kneeling, and bending for periods of up to 10-12 hours per day. Frequent carrying of a backpack with equipment of up to 40 lbs. across uneven terrain.

    WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
    Work will be performed strictly outdoors in harsh and rapidly changing environments to include all types of weather conditions to include extreme heat or cold environments, traverse uneven terrain.
