Duties

The successful applicant will be responsible for assisting senior cultural resource staff on a project-by-project basis.  Duties primarily involve fieldwork (surveys, excavation, and construction monitoring), but may also include coordinating fieldwork and crew; conducting archival research and record searches; preparing DPR forms; assisting with report preparation; coordinating with other cultural resource and environmental planning staff and subconsultants; and interacting with construction crews/foremen and clients. 

Applicants must have a minimum of 3 years of archaeological experience. Candidates must be familiar with the completion of field forms and possess excellent written and verbal communication skills.  Experience with a variety of infrastructure and development project types, document types, and private sector/public agency clients is desirable. Experience working on telecom projects a plus. Applicants must have a strong work ethic, positive attitude, and experience working in a team-oriented environment.

Horrocks Engineers is seeking an Archaeological Field Director to work out of our Pleasant Grove, Utah office beginning as soon as possible. Responsibilities will include assisting with survey, monitoring, and excavation of cultural resources in Utah, Colorado, Arizona, Nevada, and Idaho. Additional responsibilities will include site form and report preparation. This position is full-time and expected to work a minimum of 40 hours per week. Additional hours may be available depending on project availability including both field and office work. This position is temporary, based on project availability. We expect the position to last a minimum of 5 months, with the potential to be extended beyond that time.

Job Requirements

·        BA or BS in anthropology with an archaeological emphasis is required.

·        A Master’s degree is preferred. 

·        One year of supervisory experience in the Intermountain West is preferred.

·        Basic archaeological field skills for survey, excavation, and monitoring of construction work are required.

·        Familiarity with the Utah Archaeology Site Form (UASF) format is also required.

·         Applicants must be able to hike at least 8 miles per day in a variety of weather conditions in remote locations over difficult and uneven terrain while carrying up to 25 lbs. of gear.

·        Some fieldwork will require overnight stays.

Harris Environmental Group (HEG) is looking for Archaeological Field Technicians for cultural resources survey projects in northern Arizona near Vermillion Cliffs National Monument.

The project will begin May 20th. Crews will be working 8-day sessions, Thursday to Thursday. Camping is required. Camping per diem is $100.00/day. Pay is based on SCA wage rates for Coconino County, AZ. Two months of fieldwork are anticipated (four or five sessions).

Field Technicians are responsible for assisting the Crew Chief in identifying and recording cultural resources in the field. This includes identifying and documenting all types of regional artifacts and features, thoroughly filling out appropriate site forms, site/artifact photography, navigating survey transects with Garmin GPS, and mapping site using Trimble GPS.

Minimum Qualifications:

·         Bachelor’s Degree in archaeology, anthropology, or related field

-          Accredited field school (preferred)

·         At least 12 months of supervised experience in CRM pedestrian survey (preferred)

·         Ability to work in hot conditions, inclement weather, rugged terrain, and remote locations

·         Ability to hike up to 10 miles a day in rugged terrain while carrying up to 40 lbs. of gear and water (required)

·         Proficiency with basic Garmin GPS devices  and familiarity with Trimble GPS (using Terrasync) is preferred

·         Experience identifying and documenting regional ceramic typologies of the northern Arizona / southern Utah (preferred)

I got to know Doug Loebig, the co-founder of SEAS, when he had the misfortune of taking over a crew I was on. The crew comprising Navajo, occasionally Zuni, Alley-Cat the backhoe operator, and some bilagáana like me were on a pipeline running through the Tohatchi flats in the shadow of the Chuska mountains. The Field Director warned Doug that we were the “Next to Worthless Crew”. Maybe we were to him, but Doug didn’t give a frick. And because Doug was the new crew chief on the project, he (and we) were not in the queue for any of what everyone knew were going to be some impressive sites to mitigate. They gave him a nondescript surface scatter, LA 80410, and we resigned ourselves to dig another mediocre site. Doug took a walk across the scatter, went back to the truck to grab the hand auger with a couple of extensions, and dropped in a probe at what looked to be a random spot. Doug watched the soil come out of the auger, he felt it as it sifted through his fingers, hell he might have smelled and tasted it. When he was done he stated “There’s a pit structure here” as if it was clearly obvious (it was not). Then Doug looked around, walked a few meters north and dropped in another probe, and casually said “Here is another one”. A few probes later, Doug had determined there was an associated room block too. We all looked at one another. “Yeah, sure right, dude”. Then Doug broke out the transit and had us lay in the grid.
 
Over the following seasons, Doug guided us in excavating what turned out to be a very nice BMIII/PI site with some extremely unique and interesting architectural features (I could be wrong on the time period off the top of my head but I don’t want to dig the report out of the attic ;-). The period the site was from didn’t matter. What mattered is what Doug did. Which was pretty much everything. It was amazing to watch this totally humble dude just “know” so much about so many things: paleobotany, soils, mapping, survey, material culture, features, prehistoric and modern culture (and how they interleave), and be so willing to share it. What should have been a crappy long winter digging a non-site turned into one of the most memorable and educational experiences I ever have had the opportunity to be a part of. 
 
It is a fine line between extolling the qualities of someone and coming across too strong. So all I can really say is that I would dig with Doug again.
 
In this boom period of CRM, people with the qualifications of what Doug and Cynthia’s company, SEAS, are looking for are in high demand and short supply. But if you are someone who might be a good fit, give their posting here a second glance and reflect for a minute about what it is you first got into archaeology for and what you want to do with your education, and yourself. You might find that immersing yourself in the four-corners with some great people might be the perfect complement to what it was you always meant to do, but might have lost sight of along the way.

Position Description: 
In cooperation with the National Park Service’s Death Valley National Park, the Great Basin Institute (GBI) is recruiting a Curation Technician to join the Research Associate (RA) Program. The Curation Technician Research Associate will assist DEVA Museum Curators staff with curation projects, specifically focused on working with metals and composite metal/wood objects. Historic firearms and historic wrought iron objects in the museum collections at Death Valley National Park require preservation maintenance and treatment. These collections are exhibited and stored in two locations within this very large National Park. Some components are particularly exposed to impacts ranging from abrasive dust and the outdoor environment to impacts from long term exhibit in a house museum context. Preservation maintenance is necessary to minimize impacts, improve and monitor condition, and target appropriate stabilization or upgrades.

Museum collections and archives work may include accessioning and cataloging of museum objects and archives, processing incoming and outgoing loans, scanning documents and historic photos, maintaining museum records, and other miscellaneous tasks associated with the museum collections.

Specific duties associated with museum, lab analysis, and data processing, include but are not limited to:

• Perform cyclic maintenance for historic firearms in storage based on condition survey and curator recommendations for these historic objects.  
• Write condition and treatment reports.
• Perform cyclic maintenance/ upgrades for iron, copper, and metal/wood composite objects collections including cyclic cleaning and waxing (of some objects) on exhibit and in storage.
• Perform routine Integrated Pest Management (IPM) inspections, primarily for insects in collections storage spaces. Enter results into the DEVA IPM reporting software.
• Perform environmental monitoring of approximately 25 spaces using dataloggers and associated software. Analyze data and produce a short monthly report.
• Assist the Scotty’s Castle curator with research requests, volunteer staff and other duties as assigned.

The work is partially sedentary, with prolonged standing, walking on uneven surfaces, occasional work at heights of up to 15 feet, and bending often required, and lifting and moving of heavy items weighing 50 pounds or more.

Location: 
Death Valley National Park is located in California and Nevada and boasts some of the hottest and driest climates, and lowest elevation in North America. The park includes a superlative desert of streaming sand dunes, snow-capped mountains, multicolored rock layers, water-fluted canyons and three million acres of wilderness. Death Valley is home to the Timbisha Shoshone people and to plants and animals unique to the harshest desert environment. The closest cities are Pahrump and Beatty, Nevada (both approximately 1 hour away). Las Vegas is a little over 2 hours away.

Resources of the region include threatened and/or endangered species habitat, big game habitats, abandoned mine lands, and historic and prehistoric cultural sites.

Archaeology Field Director (Full-time) Tucson or Phoenix

 

WestLand Resources Inc., is actively seeking an experienced field director to oversee archaeological survey, testing and data recovery projects throughout Arizona and New Mexico. The successful candidate can work out of WestLand's Phoenix or Tucson office.

WestLand's cultural resources consulting practice specializes in archaeological surveys, monitoring, archaeological testing, and data recovery projects for a variety of clients throughout the Southwest. WestLand's staff members are well versed in city, state, and federal procedures and policies. The successful candidate will have to be able to be permitted by the Arizona State Museum as a Project Director and should hold additional Forest Service and BLM permits.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Master's degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or related field. Bachelor's degree in Archaeology, Anthropology, or related field AND additional years of experience may substitute Master's degree.
  • A Minimum of two years supervisory experience in the American Southwest
  • Previous experience writing technical archaeological reports.
  • Ability to work in a fast paced and creative environment.
  • Ability to travel for assignments

Essential Duties

  • Project Management
  • Supervise field crews
  • Conduct and Oversee Class III Cultural Resource Surveys
  • Conduct eligibility testing projects
  • Conduct archaeological Data Recovery Projects
  • Other related duties as assigned
