Job Description

 

Commonwealth Heritage Group, Inc., is seeking qualified applicants to fill a Project Archaeologist position in our Columbus, Ohio office, working 40 hours per week. Applicants should have an M.A/M.S. in Anthropology or Archaeology and have one season directing fieldwork, and experience with analysis and site reporting. Prior experience with Trimble GPS equipment and GIS is preferred.

We currently have several archaeological technician positions open on a variety of survey, monitoring, and excavation projects in Nevada, California, Utah, Arizona, and Idaho throughout spring/summer/fall 2021. Camping and lodging per diem is competitive and, depending on experience, rates are between $19-$25/hour (some projects will be subject to prevailing wage). Senior Archaeologist/Project Manager – Arizona – Aspen Environmental Group

 Required Education and Experience  

  • Must be permittable at the Principal Investigator or Field Director level on BLM, National Forest, and State lands in Arizona. 
  • Must be knowledgeable of federal, state, and local historic preservation and cultural resources regulations. 
  • An M.A. or a Ph.D. in archaeology.   
  • Minimum of 3 years of supervisory or management experience in CRM; RPA certification preferred.   
  • Expertise in Arizona archaeology; familiarity with U.S. Forest Service Programmatic Agreements, BLM Management Manuals.   
  • Experience assisting agencies with tribal consultation/coordination is a plus.  
  • Experience in conducting pedestrian field survey using Trimble GPS and/or Fulcrum Smartphone technology in addition to illustrating site sketch maps and features accurately.   
  • Experience identifying southwest prehistoric and historic artifact classes and materials and faunal remains,  
  • Have a sound knowledge of soils, geomorphology and how to describe them.  
  • Experience in conducting test excavations and data recovery projects, and completing site forms accurately, succinctly; and quickly in the field using Aspen apps.  
  • Successful candidates must have the ability to maintain high quality field notes, keep good organization of field records, and maintain a professional demeanor in a variety of often strenuous outdoor and remote environmental work conditions.  
  • Experience with ESRI or Adobe Creative Cloud and/or Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint) a big plus.  
  • Excellent writing skills and demonstrable experience in contributing to or preparing resource evaluation documents and technical reports.  
  • Successful candidates must have a valid AZ Driver’s License with a clean driving record and be comfortable working in strenuous hiking and harsh weather conditions.

2021 Field Season Archaeological Technicians - Salt Lake City, Utah

Responsibilities: The candidate is to provide cultural resource technical assistance to a field director and/or Principal Investigator during cultural resource undertakings. Potential work includes, but not limited to, field inventory, monitoring, evaluative testing, and site mitigation. Field work will be within the Intermountain West region (Utah, Nevada, Idaho, Wyoming, and Colorado) with potential for work across the continental United States.

The Great Basin Institute, in cooperation with the National Park Service, is recruiting three (3) Archaeology Crew Members to complete Section 106 cultural resource surveys, site recording and monitoring for various projects within Whiskeytown National Recreation Area (WHIS). This work provides numerous professional development opportunities in cultural resource management. Crew Members will gain an expanded professional network as they interact with agency staff, along with benefiting from exposure to NPS processes, procedures, compliance measures and reporting, and technical experience. These projects support NPS initiatives for healthy and productive landscapes and resources.

These are crew-level positions: Crews will receive instruction, guidance and training from GBI crew leads and/or Park Service supervisors. Crew size will be 4 people.

Primary responsibilities will include the following:
  • Collaborate with Archaeology crew lead and agency staff to support field safety, communication, planning, logistics, quality assurance, field implementation, and reporting efforts;
  • Complete field surveys to document, assess and characterize the status of new cultural resources;
  • Monitor existing sites and complete site updates and condition assessments;
  • Prepare California DPR site records, GIS maps, and photographic records.
This physically demanding work, often in remote locations, will provide Archaeology Crew Members with rewarding exposure to some of California’s backcountry forested landscapes. These positions require extensive hiking with heavy packs on a daily basis, possibly during extreme or inclement weather conditions such as heat or rain. Work schedules, generally four 10-hour days (Monday-Thursday) with 3 days off each week, are subject to change depending on weather and project needs. Camping in primitive campgrounds within the Park will be required to meet project objectives.

Location: 
Whiskeytown National Recreation Area (WHIS) is part of the Klamath Network that includes 6 parks: Crater Lake National Park (Crater Lake), Lava Beds National Monument (Lava Beds), Lassen Volcanic National Monument (Lassen), Oregon Caves National Monument and Reserve (Oregon Caves), Redwood National and State Parks (Redwood), and Whiskeytown National Recreation Area (Whiskeytown), located throughout northern California and southern Oregon. The parks span a land area of complex topography in the geologically ancient Klamth-Siskiyou Ecoregion in the west (Redwood, Oregon Caves, Whiskeytown), and the younger, volcanic Cascades-Modoc Ecoregion to the east (Crater Lake, Lassen, and Lava Beds). Vegetation of the two subregions ranges from temperate rainforests with enormous, world-record-height trees along the coast at Redwood, to barren shrublands on infertile soils and rock in the sagebrush desert of Lava Beds. Elevation extends from sea level at Redwood to about timberline in Crater Lake and Lassen.

Whiskeytown NRA was directly impacted by the 2018 Carr Fire. Work completed by the archaeology team will help to address the monitoring and recording of cultural resources post-fire and aid in the management of park cultural resources going forward.

Compensation:
Living Allowance and Education Award: Crew Members in these AmeriCorps positions will receive a living allowance, the value of which is dependent on the length of service. The living allowance is a fixed amount, not an hourly wage or a salary. The allowance is paid to members in bi-weekly installments throughout their term of service. Upon successful completion of AmeriCorps service, members become eligible for an education award (the amount is dependent on the length of service) that can be used for paying student loans, paying tuition for a Title IV accredited college, as well as additional certifications such as NOLS courses.
  • Living Allowance: Approx. $500/week
  • Education Awards: $2360.00
  • Health Insurance: The Great Basin Institute will cover 100% of the premium for Health, Dental and Vision Insurance for each member.
  • Student Loan Forbearance: If you are currently paying on any federal student loans, you have the option to put those loans into forbearance during your time as an AmeriCorps volunteer, allowing you to cease payments while in service.
  • Interest Accrual Repayment: As an AmeriCorps alumnus, you will be eligible to have the National Service Trust pay all or a portion of the interest that accumulated on your qualified student loan(s) during your term of service. These payments are made in addition to the Education Award, and are not deducted from your Education Award balance. To be eligible for this service, the loan must have been placed in forbearance for the service period, and you must have successfully completed a term of service and received an Education Award.
Timeline: 
  • 19 week appointment starting mid-late April 2021- August 2021 (675HR term).
  • Crew Members are expected to work full time; minimum 40 hours per week.

Job Description: 
The Great Basin Institute, in cooperation with the National Park Service, is recruiting an Archaeology Crew Lead to complete Section 106 cultural resource surveys, site recording and monitoring for various projects within the Whiskeytown National Recreation Area (WHIS). This work provides professional development and leadership opportunities in cultural resource management including increased exposure and responsibility enacting NPS processes, procedures, and compliance measures; assisting in reporting and data entry/quality assurance and control; and increased technical experience.

The Archaeology Crew Lead will perform a variety of activities to support all stages of project work. The lead will be responsible for crew safety and oversight, provide or assist in training, and converse with agency and GBI staff as needed. Crew size will be 4 people. Primary archaeology field duties will include:
  • Lead archaeology crew to conduct and complete field surveys to document, assess and characterize the status of new cultural resources;
  • Monitor existing sites and complete site updates and condition assessments;
  • Prepare California DPR site records, GIS maps, and photographic records;
  • Lead and collaborate with agency personnel and all other crew members to support field safety, communication, planning, logistics, quality assurance, field implementation, and reporting efforts.
This physically demanding work, often in remote locations, will provide the Archaeology Crew Lead with rewarding exposure to some of California’s backcountry forested landscapes. These positions require extensive hiking in steep terrain with heavy packs on a daily basis, possibly during extreme or inclement weather conditions such as heat or rain. Work schedules, generally four 10-hour days (Monday-Thursday) with 3 days off each week, are subject to change depending on weather and project needs. Camping in primitive campgrounds within the Park will be required to meet project objectives.

Location: 
Whiskeytown National Recreation Area (WHIS) is part of the Klamath Network that includes 6 parks: Crater Lake National Park (Crater Lake), Lava Beds National Monument (Lava Beds), Lassen Volcanic National Monument (Lassen), Oregon Caves National Monument and Reserve (Oregon Caves), Redwood National and State Parks (Redwood), and Whiskeytown National Recreation Area (Whiskeytown), located throughout northern California and southern Oregon. The parks span a land area of complex topography in the geologically ancient Klamth-Siskiyou Ecoregion in the west (Redwood, Oregon Caves, Whiskeytown), and the younger, volcanic Cascades-Modoc Ecoregion to the east (Crater Lake, Lassen, and Lava Beds). Vegetation of the two subregions ranges from temperate rainforests with enormous, world-record-height trees along the coast at Redwood, to barren shrublands on infertile soils and rock in the sagebrush desert of Lava Beds. Elevation extends from sea level at Redwood to about timberline in Crater Lake and Lassen.

Whiskeytown NRA was directly impacted by the 2018 Carr Fire. Work completed by the archaeology team will help to address the monitoring and recording of cultural resources post-fire and aid in the management of park cultural resources going forward.

(CRA) seeks temporary Archaeological Technicians to support ongoing Phase II National Register evaluations of several prehistoric sites in Cabell County, West Virginia. Job Description

 

Commonwealth is looking for temporary Cultural Resources Technicians to work on a project at the Tooele Army Depot in Utah. Fieldwork will begin early April and will extend into June. There will be 8-day field sessions (Wednesday to Wednesday), working 10-hours a day. Lodging and per diem are included. Prior to fieldwork, Technicians will need to complete four hours of training (with pay). Policies and procedures outlined in the trainings will be strictly followed. These positions are hourly with the pay rate between $13 and $16 per hour, based on individual qualifications and experience.

 

Qualifications

  • Must be able to pass a federal background check to gain clearance and sign a Confidentiality Agreement;
  • Conduct a pedestrian archaeological survey, walking about 7 to 10 miles a day;
  • Work in the field under the direct supervision of a Crew Chief while conducting archaeological fieldwork;
  • Record using a Trimble GPS and thorough photo documentation; and
  • A willingness to learn and take direction, as well as, work as a team member.

 

A Bachelor's Degree in anthropology, archaeology, or a closely related field or field school or equivalent experience providing knowledge of archaeological survey and recordation techniques and methodology is preferred.
