Qualifications include a minimum of a Masters degree in anthropology or closely related field; a minimum of three years of demonstrated PI level experience and expertise; a peer-reviewed publication record and conference presentation experience is desired; experience with report technical review as well as creating and managing schedules and budgets are important; and the individual must be able to work independently, work well with other team members, and communicate directions clearly. Compensation will be commensurate with experience, particularly in a Cultural Resource Management setting.

Other qualifications include excellent writing and verbal communication skills, strong organizational skills, and technological proficiency that includes some experience working with GIS and relational databases. Specialized skill sets, such as historic material cultural, archival research, lithics, geoarchaeology, geophysical survey, prehistoric ceramics analysis and/or mortuary studies, are preferred. A working knowledge of relevant historic preservation legislation and regulations is essential. Applicant will be registered with the Register of Professional Archaeologists or will be eligible for listing as a Registered Professional Archaeologist. Primary duties will include: Responsible for assigned phase I (inventory-level survey), phase II (National Register evaluation), and phase III projects throughout the Ohio Valley, Mid-West, and Southeastern U.S. This will involve conducting pre-field research, directing fieldwork and laboratory analysis, and preparing technical reports. It is imperative that candidates be able to work 8 to 10 hour days in a variety of conditions and understand that there will be frequent stays away from the office. Archaeologist (Temporary) ($27/hr) The Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML) is hiring a Secretary of the Interior (SOI) qualified archaeologist for an 8-month term on the Island of Kauai. The archaeologist will be responsible for completing small-scale surveys and respond to inadvertent discoveries that may include archaeological sites, historical sites, and potentially human remains. The archaeologist must also provide onsite technical support and guidance to military land managers regarding undertakings with the potential to effect historic properties. Hourly wage is $27/hour (commensurate with experience and qualifications). This is a temporary position not to exceed 8-months. No relocation, per diem, or lodging provided.
Qualifications: - Master’s Degree in Anthropology or Archaeology - 2-years (minimum) professional archaeological experience in Hawaii. - Archaeological field project management experience including supervision of other professionals in the field. - Experience in archaeological field survey methods, including pedestrian and shovel testing archaeological field surveys, mapping, digital photography, and recording archaeological findings on standardized forms. - Ability to work independently and manage inadvertent discoveries, which may involve human remains. - Working familiarity with NRHP Sections 106 and 110, NAGPRA, and ARPA. - Have a thorough understanding of most standard computer programs, especially MS Word and Excel. - Competent in the use of Trimble GPS units and Pathfinder Office Software. - Competent in the use of ArcGIS, ArcMap and ArcCatalog for production of maps and data management. - A willingness to work in a highly structured work environment with established lines of authority, procedures and protocols is required. - Experience with human remains in archaeological contexts preferred. - Previous experience on a military base is also beneficial.
Work will be performed outdoors and the successful candidates must be able to walk over uneven terrain in inclement weather. The position may be required to bend, climb, and lift up to 35lbs. Must have own vehicle. Mileage will be paid for work related use. Successful candidates must have a valid driver’s license and be eligible to work in the United States by the proposed start date. Schedule and Location.
Work is anticipated to occur during day, swing, and night shifts for a period of several months or longer. Candidates should reside within commuting distance of the greater Los Angeles area; per diem is not available for this assignment.
Position Description & Responsibilities.
Primarily, the archaeologist will conduct construction monitoring, but may be required to perform archaeological surveys, testing, evaluations, data recovery, as well as other tasks, as necessary.

Description of Duties: The Cultural Resource Compliance Manager will be responsible for supporting the Department’s Project Evaluation Program (PEP) which provides environmental services through compliance with regulatory requirements and assuring that all Department projects comply with environmental laws. This position will advise, facilitate and plan the protection, preservation and management of historic and archaeological resources for Arizona Game and Fish Commission properties and activities.
Major duties will include: · Coordinate the Department’s cultural compliance on all applicable State and Federal Historic Preservation and Antiquity laws and guidelines · Review and approve project and property management plans to ensure compliance with cultural resource laws · Lead coordination between the Department, SHPO and respective federal agencies on cultural resource projects and compliance · Review and approve cultural inventory or project proposals and survey reports to ensure fieldwork and reports are complete and conform to guidelines · Develop project planning to include cultural compliance needs and coordination · Acts as the cultural resources liaison with other state, federal and tribal agencies to form partnerships related to ensuring the protection and preservation of cultural resources · Manage and oversee consultant activities in relation to archaeological surveys, site flagging, monitoring, testing, and data recovery · Performs other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: The candidate must have knowledge of: State and Federal laws pertaining to historic preservation, archaeology and cultural resource management and coordination, administration of cultural compliance planning, organizing and preparation of documentation for cultural resources, methods and techniques of information for archaeology resources, principles, fundamental concepts and practices of cultural resource management.
The candidate must be skilled in communicating in a team environment including both written and orally, applying current scientific archaeological theory, methods and techniques in the identification, evaluation and preservation treatment of archaeological resources, working with complex project proposals and technical reports, project management, basic computer skills in GIS.
The candidate will be able to manage multiple tasks, while shepherding large projects through a complex and often changing process. To develop effective and positive interrelationships with all staff and with other partner agencies, analyze and prepare detailed cultural resource compliance reports and documentation, and work independently and as part of a team.
The candidate must be able to obtain an Arizona Antiquities Act permit and accompanying Repository Agreements, as issued through the Arizona State Museum (ASM), in addition to archaeological/cultural resource use permits which is issued by various federal agencies throughout Arizona.
The candidate will have a Master’s degree in archaeology, anthropology, or a closely related field and three years of professional or managerial experience in archaeology or cultural resources management and compliance or any combination of training and experience that meets the knowledge, skills and abilities may be substituted.
The ideal candidate will have experience coordinating and ensuring compliance for a natural resource or land management agency, including performing tribal coordination and project clearance or coordination with a state historic preservation office.
Position requires possession of and the ability to retain a current, valid state-issued driver’s license appropriate to the assignment. Employees who drive on state business are subject to driver’s license record checks, must maintain acceptable driving records and must complete any required driver training (see Arizona Administrative Code R2-10-207.12.).

Our highly successful team of environmental planners, biologists, and archaeologists provides environmental planning, permitting, and compliance services, as well as infrastructure siting, Class I literature reviews, Class II reconnaissance surveys, and Class III intensive pedestrian surveys, Phase I testing, Phase II excavation, Phase III data recovery, and environmental construction management and monitoring. We are seeking on-call archaeologists for various field and office assignments out of our Draper (Salt Lake City) or Cedar City, Utah offices; Mesa, Arizona office; and Rawlins, Wyoming office. There is potential for these on-call positions to become full-time. Primary duties may include assisting with environmental compliance reviews, conducting cultural resource surveys, writing site forms and reports, and monitoring construction activities. Work will include both one-day and multiple-day assignments. Successful applicants should be able to work long days in the field, in both the winter and summer.
