This position’s primary duty is to conduct archaeological review and survey of projects for GADNR’s Wildlife Resources Division in advance of timber harvest. The successful applicant will triage, manage, and complete large numbers of small project requests. These projects will require both desktop project reviews as well as field reconnaissance surveys on state lands throughout Georgia managed by the Wildlife Resources Division. This position will require frequent overnight travel and occasional long days in remote locations. The incumbent will work closely with the Georgia State Parks and Historic Sites archaeologist. Additional duties related to state and federal mandated preservation programs and preservation activities will be required.

The ideal applicant will have a bachelor’s degree (or higher) in anthropology and a minimum of six months of experience in archaeological survey, prehistoric and historic-period site documentation, use of handheld GPS units for site mapping, and site form preparation.
All applicants must be able to walk up to 12 miles per day in difficult terrain and extreme weather carrying a 20-pound pack. Some surveys will require overnight camping in remote locations. EcoPlan especially values a commitment to effective communication, teamwork, and quality in all aspects of archaeological fieldwork, including mapping, note taking, and digital photography.

Theory and methods of archeology. Methods include, but are not limited to, typology, classification, sampling, cultural evolution, diffusion, dating, and analytical techniques.
Archeological field school, to provide a basic understanding of theoretical and practical approaches to research design implementation, field preservation techniques, and report preparation by participation in actual field work.
Six semester hours of related course work in:
geography, geology, or cultural geography;
history, historiography, or historical archeology;
scientific writing (nonfiction English composition); and/or
Archeological field school.
2. Related Curriculum: degree in anthropology (with emphasis on ethnology, physical anthropology, or scientific linguistics), history, American studies, or a related discipline may be accepted as satisfying in full the educational requirements, provided the curriculum supplied academic course work sufficiently similar to the requirements in A.1 (including archeological field school).
2. Combination of Education and Experience
College-level education or training that provided knowledge equivalent to that described in A above, plus appropriate technical experience or additional education.
Four years of archeological work experience that demonstrated a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional archeology. The work experience must have included archeology field experience, which may include that gained in an archeological field school. Field experience should have included a combination of professional experience in archeological survey, excavation, laboratory analysis, and preparation of written materials. Applicants with such field experience should, after additional experience under the direction of a higher grade archeologist, be able to demonstrate the ability to be a crew chief, directing the work of others at a single location as a part of a larger archeological project.
Experience and Education Requirements for GS-7:
In addition to meeting the basic entry qualification requirements, applicants must have specialized experience and/or directly related education.
One year of specialized experience which includes archaeological methods and theory, or cultural resources management.
Education: One full year of graduate level education (education should read as Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree) in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of a position, such as: anthropology or archaeology .
Superior Academic Achievement (SAA). In order to be creditable under this provision, Superior Academic Achievement must have been gained in a curriculum that is qualifying for the position to be filled, such as that identified in Education above. Superior Academic Achievement is based on:
(1) Class Standing - Applicants must be in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses; OR

Marstel-Day, LLC, an environmental consulting and planning firm, seeks qualified, on-call Cultural Resource Field Technicians and Crew Chiefs, to support Phase I/II/III archaeology field studies and other cultural resources studies.
Applicants should possess a strong commitment to a conservation ethic, a strong desire to identify and support strategies for cultural and natural resource conservation, a commitment to use green best management practices in the performance of their work, and a determination to provide excellent support to meeting client requirements. The successful candidate(s) will become members of a pool of prospective Field Technicians or Crew Chiefs, who will be called upon to perform work on an hourly basis as the Company receives task orders or assignments for these types of studies and analyses.

The primary duties of the cultural resource field position will be to provide direct support for the implementation and execution of archaeology studies for federal agencies, including the Department of Defense (DoD), militaryservices, the Veterans Administration, the US Forest Service among others, and state/local governments or private entities seeking to comply with federal requirements, and to provide artifact analysis and technical writing support for documenting field results, and technical research to support other cultural resource studies.
Duties also include data recording, mapping, note taking, and artifact processing and some photography. For projects within the DC Metro area, daily travel may be required to the job site from the incumbent’s home location. For projects outside the DC Metro area, the incumbent may be required to be on travel for an extended period (1 to 3 weeks) and stay at accommodations near a job site. Marstel-Day will compensate the incumbent for mileage and per-diem costs based on standard US GSA rates.
Essential Functions Description:
The incumbent will normally work outdoors during any season of the year mainly within the Mid-Atlantic area under varying climatic conditions. Work activities will require substantial manual labor including digging using hand tools (shovel, trowel), lifting, sorting/sifting through materials, repetitive field tasks, and hiking through difficult terrain. For certain projects, the incumbent may be tasked with preparing written communications including the use of e-mail and other electronic reproduction of words, graphs, and photos. Furthermore, the incumbent may be required to make regular use of and be proficient with computers, telephones, mobile communication devices, GPS devices, copy machines and printers.
Salary and Benefits:
The Company will pay an hourly rate of $15 to $22 per hour for the Cultural Resource Field Technician position commensurate with the incumbent’s level of education and experience and responsibilities, unless wage and hours regulations governing the project require payment of a higher rate, in which case that higher rate will be paid for that project.
For these part-time, temporary positions, the company offers access to a 401(k) plan and sick leave (one hour for every thirty hours worked), but no other fringe benefits.

Archaeology Tech applicants must have:
• Minimum 3 years of experience and knowledge in conducting archaeology field studies (preferably with federal agency project experience), including an understanding of federal agency missions as a plus. Some experience in report preparation and artifact analysis a plus
• Minimum 3 years of field experience supporting archaeological field surveys (Phase I, II) and other cultural resources planning studies in the Mid-Atlantic region
• An undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university in a field related to cultural resources, or a related subject. A Master’s Degree is a plus. A 3.4 grade point average (on a 4-point scale or equivalent) in the highest awarded degree is a plus
• A strong background in cultural resources work
• GPS and GIS experience is a plus
• Meeting Secretary of the Interior’s Professional Qualifications for Archaeology or History a plus.
• Demonstrated determination to provide excellent support to meeting client requirements
• Intellectual curiosity, paired with excellent oral and written communication skills
• Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office suite programs Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and abilities with Access a plus
• Availability for frequent travel in the U.S. as required
• A demonstrable and strong commitment to a conservation ethic and a strong desire to identify and support strategies for cultural and natural resource conservation and a commitment to use green best management practices in the performance of their work

· Perform archaeological survey (pedestrian reconnaissance, shovel testing, or urban archaeological investigations working alongside heavy machinery) under the direction of project Crew Chiefs and Field Director.
· Excavate and document excavation units as components of archaeological evaluation and data recovery projects.

Travel and fieldwork are requirements of this position. Salary is commensurate with experience. In addition to lodging, archaeologists will receive a daily per diem matching the current Federal GSA rates (minimally $55) for projects outside of the Minneapolis/St Paul metro area.
