Dutton + Associates, LLC (D+A) is seeking Archaeology Field Technicians to join its Archaeology Group. D+A is a small woman-owned business providing cultural resource management services to public and private sector clients within the Mid-Atlantic region.  Archaeology Field Technicians will work closely with Archaeology Field Supervisors and will be responsible for implementing surveys methods and documenting findings in accordance with all applicable standards and guidelines. The position will be based out of D+A’s home office in Midlothian, Virginia and some regional overnight travel is expected. The majority of work, however, will be local and not per diem.

 

Job responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

¨      Carry out archaeological investigations (Phase I identification, Phase II evaluation, Phase III data recovery, and archaeological monitoring) in a Cultural Resources Management setting;

¨      Conduct archaeological excavation outdoors in all weather conditions in both rural and urban environments; with overnight stays on out-of-town projects when required;

¨      Work with and provide support to other members of the Archaeology Group in assisting with other field and laboratory activities as required;

¨      Participate in D+A’s Health & Safety program;

¨      Demonstrate a “Safety First” focus;

¨      Maintain a high standard of ethical behavior and uphold D+A’s reputation;

¨      Demonstrate a commitment to D+A’s Core Values; and

¨      Perform other duties as required, including but not limited to, artifact processing, reporting, research, and technical services.

 

The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications:

¨      Bachelor’s Degree in Archaeology, Anthropology or related field from a recognized program;

¨      Demonstrated experience in archaeological fieldwork and the ability to implement field methodologies efficiently and at a brisk pace;

¨      Ability to lift and carry 40lbs across diverse terrain for long distances and in a variety of weather conditions;

¨      Knowledge and familiarity with use of a compass and general orienteering in wilderness settings;

¨      Demonstrated ability to work as team member; and

¨      A valid state driver’s license and good driving record.

CRA’s Knoxville, Tennessee office seeks an Historic Staff Archaeologist with regional (i.e. Southeast) experience. Experience in Tennessee is desirable. The qualified candidate must have a graduate degree in Anthropology, a minimum of 3-5 years of experience conducting archaeological survey, and a focus on historic period materials. Candidate must meet the Secretary of the Interior Standards (36 CFR 61) in archaeology, and should have demonstrated skills in CRM, including supervisory experience on Phase I projects. The candidate will be expected to direct and manage phase I surveys for clients in both the public and private sectors, including multiple projects at a time. Expect frequent stays away from the office. Specific duties include managing field crews, conduct analyses, interpret analytical data, and write reports. The ability to write clearly and professionally is very important. Familiarity with the use of GPS units is expected. The candidate needs to be detail oriented and have excellent verbal and written communication skills, strong organizational skills, and must be technologically proficient including experience with databases. It is imperative that the candidate be able to work 8 to 10 hour days (or longer if necessary) in a variety of conditions. Stooping, bending and lifting are essential functions of this position.

Texas/Oklahoma Field Techs & Crew Chiefs -- from $18/hr up to $22/hr

Cox|McLain Environmental Consulting, Inc. (CMEC), a small Austin-based firm with offices in Houston, DFW, Oklahoma City, and Tulsa, is looking to fill technician and crew chief positions for multiple field projects in Texas and Oklahoma in 2019. 

The primary function of the positions at all levels is to support senior cultural resources staff (archeology and historic resources Principal Investigators and/or Project Archeologists) as needed with fieldwork and subsequent paperwork/artifact processing. Duties may include performing pedestrian examination of the ground surface, digging shovel test units, observing/supervising mechanical excavations, correctly using Munsell soil color charts and other standard field tools/resources, recording units and sites on company- or agency-mandated forms, and other standard archeological survey and follow-up tasks at the direction of the PI/PA, as well as supporting historic architectural surveys. Duties of crew chiefs also include supervising technicians, providing direction in field protocols and safety considerations, and performing real-time quality control on project documentation. All positions may require bending, stooping, carrying field equipment, standing, and walking for extended periods of time, and making visual and tactile distinctions using color, texture, moisture content, depth, and distance. 

Compensation varies based on individual project budgets and candidate qualifications but generally ranges from $18/hour for entry-level field technicians up to approximately $22/hour for experienced senior techs/crew chiefs. Typical per diem rate of $40-51/day, with GSA rate as applicable. Expenses reimbursed per project contracts; cash per diem is disbursed when allowed by the ultimate client but is not guaranteed for every project. Single-occupancy lodging provided on multi-day projects. 

These positions are temporary positions on a project-specific basis, not on-call contracts. Benefits and relocation assistance are not available. Successful application/performance on one or more projects is not to be construed as a guarantee of future part- or full-time work. That said, CMEC is a growing company, with new staff positions developing every few months. We often keep our eye on high-performing technicians and crew chiefs as potential staff candidates.

The successful applicant will possess, at a minimum, a bachelor’s degree in archeology, anthropology, geology, or a closely related field. Also required: completion of recognized archeological field school; survey experience in Texas, Oklahoma, or the greater south and southwest United States; an overall dedication to excellence; a strong work ethic; a demonstrated ability to work independently; and solid field skills including the ability to work in difficult conditions (e.g., hot, humid environments) and to navigate in remote, rough, and/or heavily vegetated terrain using USGS topographic maps, aerial-base field maps, or handheld GPS units.

Preferred for senior level techs/crew chiefs: experience managing multiple technicians; graduate degree in archeology, anthropology, or closely related field; experience with a range of Global Positioning System (GPS) equipment; experience with historic resources surveys; familiarity with NHPA/NEPA compliance; previous safety training/certification (OSHA, CPR/First Aid, etc.).

PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION/TRAINING:  Master’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Archaeology, Anthropology, Cultural Resources Management, or related field.  EXPERIENCE:  Three to five (3-5) years of experience in identifying, documenting, evaluating, monitoring, or managing cultural resources.  One to three (1-3) years of experience as a Field Supervisor in Archaeological projects, including project report write-up and analysis. The Department of History in the Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences at East Carolina University is composed of 21 full-time faculty members. The Program in Maritime Studies is an internationally-known and respected program housed within the Department of History. The program has 4 full-time faculty members, but the entire department contributes. The Department of History offers a BA degree in History, a minor in History, a minor in Public History, MA in History, and MA in Maritime Studies. East Carolina University is located in Greenville, North Carolina, a city of approximately 90,000. Greenville is located about 80 miles east of Raleigh and is within a short drive to the Outer Banks and other Atlantic Ocean beaches.

Job Duties

The Department of History and the Program in Maritime Studies invite applications for a Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) Research Fellow appointment in Maritime Archaeology to begin as soon as possible. The DPAA Research Fellow for the History Department at East Carolina University is a temporary position beginning as soon as possible and ending April 16, 2019. The Fellow will work in collaboration with the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA), an agency of the Department of Defense whose mission is to search for, recover and identify remains of missing personnel from World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Cold War, the Gulf Wars, and other recent conflicts. DPAA’s cases are based on information received from families, archival and historical research, findings from local residents in the area where these wars were fought, and field investigations.

The DPAA Fellow will have the following responsibilities:
• Initiate a research agenda and contribute to the historical and archaeological scholarship on unaccounted-for service personnel (e.g., missing in action, killed with no body returned, or prisoners of war that did not return).
• Facilitate historical and archaeological research to conduct geospatial analysis of available primary sources to define prioritization of historical events and provide a defined search grid and survey plan to locate prioritized underwater loss incidents identified by
DPAA.
• Build and manage a network of constituencies involved in underwater archaeology who can contribute to on-going research on POWs/MIAs.
• Communicate with
DPAA Fellows at other institutions to build effective scholarly collaboration on POW/MIA research issues. Other institutions include The University of Wisconsin, Brigham Young University, Tuskegee University, and Scripps Oceanographic Institute.

Minimum Education/Experience

Master’s degree in Maritime Studies, History, or Anthropology with a field specialization in underwater archaeology, and who is certified to Register of Professional Archaeologist standards is required.

The start date is Feb 1, 2019 or sooner if possible, and the position duration is open ended. All projects conducted on Navajo Nation require ethnographic interviews to determine potential impacts of a project on Traditional Cultural Properties (TCP) formal or informal; or other traditional places or properties within project areas of potential effect (APE). Duties and Responsibilities:

Position Overview: The Project Archaeologist works closely with the PI and Cultural Resource Program Director and is responsible for the oversight and direction of archaeological field investigations, implementing established field procedures, and ensuring all findings are documented in accordance with the applicable Federal and State standards and guidelines. The candidate for this position must be permitted by the NM BLM in the Dinetah Region. The individual must be capable of directing all levels of fieldwork, must work well with others, and must be able to write technical reports and prepare appropriate maps. Project assignments will involve directing field projects, coordinating artifact analyses, and preparing project reports. The selected individual should be able to work on assignments at various locations in the Southwest and Northern Plains. Successful candidates should be motivated, resourceful, dedicated, and organized, able to take direction, give instructions, work with diverse personalities, and contribute to a team. Frequent travel and remote locations are expectation for this position. The first project is located in the Farmington NM area.


Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
* Perform and oversee all technical aspects of field research, data collection, inventory, analysis, and final report production consistent with BLM and SHPO standards
*Documentation of all sites within the APE including revisiting and updating any previously recorded sites, and provide eligibility recommendations for all recorded resources

Thunderbird Archeology, a division of Wetlands Studies and Solutions, Inc., a Davey Company, is accepting applications for Archeological Field Technicians and Crew Chiefs for immediate temporary, project-based, full-time employment. The position will be based in our Gainesville, Virginia office. Per diem and lodging will be provided to non-local hires. Fieldwork will involve Phase I-II investigations in Loudoun County, Virginia and other potential Phase I-III investigations in the DC metro area. Responsibilities will include:

•    Participating in archeological survey, excavations and laboratory work under the direction of staff archeologists;

Roles and Responsibilities

Description:

The Great Basin Institute, in cooperation with the BLM (NV) Elko District Office (EKDO) is recruiting A GIS Technician to support to support the District’s cultural resource program. The Technician will use analog records and GIS to insure that cultural resource data from approximately 4,000 records have the correct geospatial data to be stored in the SHPO database. This archaeological archiving and records management project will provide the successful applicant with exposure to federal data, records and database systems, provide insight about how a federal land management agency operates under a multiple use mission, and will offer the opportunity to develop, hone and sharpen skills related to GIS and data management.

 

Compensation:  

  • Rate of Pay: $15.00/hour

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in GIS or Computer Science with coursework in anthropology, history or archaeology; OR Bachelor’s degree in Anthropology, History, or allied discipline;
  • Educational and field experiences related to archaeology (e.g., mapping, data recording, site photography, routing access to survey sites, and drawing artifacts, structures, and sketch maps as needed); familiarity with historic and prehistoric Great Basin archaeology preferred;
  • Proficiency using ArcGIS 10.x and operating hand-held GPS units for navigation and electronic field data collection (previous experience operating Trimble units a plus); 
  • Experience reviewing and interpreting cultural resource data in reports, maps, photographs, etc.;

Architectural Historian to Support FEMA Public Assistance Program

 

Position: Architectural Historian to Support FEMA Public Assistance Program.

Location: Nationwide

Details: Most assignments will require travel and may require temporary deployments for 30 or more days. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, pass a security clearance and undergo a background check. Pay rate is commensurate with experience. Most expenses, i.e., travel, per diem (food and lodging), are covered by the project and reimbursed directly to deployed staff.

Qualifications:

·         Must meet the Secretary of the Interior’s Standards and Guidelines for Architectural History

·         Must have a minimum of 5 years of professional experience

·         Can conduct cultural resources investigations and prepare associated documents and technical reports as necessary for cultural resources management

·         Excellent communications skills

·         Must be able to work in rough conditions and challenging weather

Ideal candidate will possess the following skills and experience:

·         A Master’s degree in history, art history, historic preservation or related field

·         Can disseminate technical information and maintain knowledge of government-wide programs and initiatives associated with implementation of historic preservation laws

·         Ability to manage multiple tasks and oversee field personnel

·         Experience with Microsoft office products

·         OSHA 10hr Construction Safety Training, OSHA 24 or 40 hr HazWoper Training

·         Knowledge of Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act

·         Experience completing environmental compliance reviews for state and federal agencies

·         Can make recommendations regarding historic preservation and compliance issues
