Archaeological Field Technician – Washington, DC The Versar Environmental Services Group is seeking a local archaeologist and monitor to support a new development project in Washington DC. This position requires flexible scheduling and the ability to be on your feet for 8-hour days. Candidates must be capable of collecting field data using Trimble GPS units, possess a valid driver's license, and have access to reliable transportation. Project tasks will primarily include monitoring mechanical excavation, detailed note taking, and photo-documentation. Must be capable of carrying out field duties, often with limited or no support, in extreme environments. The monitor will be expected to follow the direction of the principal investigator. Requirements: In addition to technical capabilities, individuals must be able to meet the requirements of various company and project safety and security requirements (i.e., no smoking in designated areas, signing confidentiality agreements, steel-toed boots and other PPE etc.). Experience leading crews and working independently to complete archaeological surveys and site documentation including feature and artifact identification and analyses; excavating shovel test pits and test units; site descriptions; photographs; and mapping. Prior experience with construction and mechanical excavation, urban archaeology, and the Washington DC region preferred. Individuals must possess a MA/MS degree in Anthropology or Archaeology, as well as successfully completing an archaeological field school. The ability to read and sketch maps, use GPS technology; and take quality field photographs and detailed notes is a must. A demonstrated background working with prehistoric and historic archaeological materials of this region and have a fundamental knowledge also required. The successful candidate will: • have a Masters degree in Anthropology (Archaeology); • qualify as a Project Director on an Arizona state permit (found here: http://www.statemuseum.arizona.edu/services/arizona-antiquities-act-permits on the right-hand side of the page); • have at least 10 years of experience in archaeology; • have at least three years experience managing multiple small projects simultaneously and providing support for larger projects; • have an understanding of cultural resource compliance within the framework of state and federal regulations; and • if at all possible, have a close familiarity with the performance of such tasks under ADOT contracts. Description: · Conduct subsurface testing · Digging numerous shovel test pits in compact and wet soils, carrying, lifting (up to 50lbs), and screening sediments for cultural materials. · Taking quality field photographs and detailed notes; and assisting crew leaders in filling out the necessary site forms and paperwork that accompany survey and testing projects. Requirements: · BA/BS degree in Anthropology or Archaeology, as well as the successful completion of an archaeological field school. · Experience conducting archaeological surveys and site documentation, which includes feature and artifact identification and analyses; performing shovel test pits (STPs); site descriptions; photographs; and mapping. · Must have a demonstrated background working with prehistoric and historic archaeological materials. · Prior experience in the Florida cultures and knowledge of Florida prehistory and history is preferred. · Requires working 8-hour days and must be capable of walking up to 4 miles a day in rough terrain. · Individuals must be capable of collecting field data using Trimble GPS units. · Individuals must be able to meet the requirements of various company and project safety and security requirements (i.e., no smoking in designated areas, UXO training, signing confidentiality agreements, etc.) · Candidates must be capable of carrying out field duties, often with limited or no support, in extreme environments. · Must possess a valid driver's license, and have access to reliable transportation. Crew Chief – Avon Park, FL Versar, Inc. requisition # 18-0012 The Versar Environmental Services Group is seeking field technicians for a Phase I and Phase II archaeological project located in Avon Park, FL. The project will run for approximately nine weeks and is scheduled to begin February 2018. Per Diem and single occupancy lodging will be provided. The position will not exceed 40 hours per work week with no guarantee of 40 hours.
