The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) is dedicated to preserving, protecting and perpetuating fish, wildlife and ecosystems, while providing sustainable recreational and commercial opportunities dependent on viable fish and wildlife populations. WDFW employees protect and restore critical habitat, strive to facilitate species recovery when necessary, and manage hundreds of fish and wildlife species.

This position helps to facilitate the implementation of $142 Million (2019-2021) budgets allocated by the legislature.

Consult and provide interagency coordination at a program manager level with interested parties including local governments (city, and utilities), Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation (DAHP), Recreation and Conservation Office (RCO), Native American Tribes, United States Army Corps of Engineer (USACE), Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Bonneville Power Administration (BPA), Bureau of Reclamation (BoR), US Fish and Wildlife Service and NOAA fish.


  • Advises/provides consultative services to program manager, program director, program staff, CAMP Archaeologist, CAMP engineers and real-estate services.
  • Implements cultural resource strategies that address legal requirements regarding Executive Order 21-02 and Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act.
  • Consults with Tribes, DAHP and other interested government agencies.
  • Assists or leads in contract preparation and administration for the purposes of contracting cultural resource consultation services to outside contractors.
  • Applies WDFW goals, objectives, and strategies to preserve and protect native fish and wildlife and their habitats by avoiding adverse effects to the property.


All interested applicants must meet the minimum qualifications and physical requirements detailed below:

Required Qualifications:

  • Must meet or exceed the U.S. Secretary of the Interior's Professional Qualifications Standards for Archaeologist or equivalent. 
  • The minimum professional qualifications for archaeologist are a graduate degree in archaeology, physical anthropology, historic preservation, or closely related field, with coursework in archaeology history, or a bachelor's degree in Anthropology, archaeology, historic preservation, or closely related field.
  • At least two years of full-time experience in research, writing, or teaching in Archaeology or Anthropology with an academic institution, historical organization or agency, museum, or other professional institution; or substantial contribution through research and publication to the body of scholarly knowledge in the field of Archaeology. See 36CFR61.
  • Graduate degree in archaeology, anthropology, cultural resource management or closely related field.
  • At least two years professional work experience in archaeological, historical, or cultural resource research, administration, or management.
  • At least twelve months of supervised field and analytic experience in general North American archaeology.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Two years of regional experience in the Pacific Northwest Coast and/or Columbia Plateau.
  • Demonstrated ability to carry research to completion.
  • Experience consulting with Native American tribes.
  • Experience with Applied Ethnography, particularly in Ethnobotany/Traditional Use of Natural Resources.


Work Setting, including hazards:       

  • Duties are performed mostly in an office setting. 
  • Work will also be performed at construction sites, fish hatcheries, wildlife areas, and newly acquired properties. 
  • This position may require walking in uneven terrain and steep slopes for extended periods. 
  • Work during inclement weather conditions may also be required.



  • Standard business hours are Monday – Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. 
  • A 40 hours/week is expected. 
  • Workload may require additional hours and the incumbent may be expected to adjust the work schedule to meet business needs. 
  • A flexible work schedule and remote work will be considered at the incumbent’s request, subject to supervisory approval.


Travel Requirements:

  • Some statewide travel is required to meet with clients, conduct business, or attend or provide training. 
  • State vehicles are available for use during required travel.


Tools and Equipment:

  • Duties require the use of standard office furniture and equipment (e.g., desk, filing cabinet, computer, printer, telephone, fax machine, copy machine, etc.). 
  • Other equipment used will include a GPS unit, camera, and hand tools for digging.

Customer Interactions:

  • Frequent contact (likely daily) with clients and project managers, including some contact with those who may be angry, distraught, or frustrated.
