AmaTerra Environmental, Inc. (AmaTerra), an award-winning, woman-owned, small business is seeking an experienced, curious, and motivated professional Project Archaeologist to join their team at AmaTerra’s Austin, Texas headquarters. The successful applicant will work alongside AmaTerra’s staff of cultural and environmental resource professionals, in a challenging and supportive environment, serving a variety of federal, state, municipal, and private clients. Applicants must have a graduate degree in anthropology, archaeology, or a closely related field. Applicants must have five or more years of professional archaeological experience leading archaeological surveys, conducting artifact analysis, and preparing detailed archeological reports for regulatory cultural resource management projects such as roadways, electrical generation, and municipal infrastructure, among others. Experience working on and/or leading National Register testing and evaluation projects, as well as data recovery excavations is preferred.

 

Preferred knowledge, skills, and abilities include:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent writing skills.
  • Working knowledge of federal and state laws, regulations, and guidelines relevant to cultural resource management. A thorough understanding of Section 106 of the NHPA and Antiquities Code of Texas is a huge plus.
  • Experience in Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and/or Louisiana (preferred), but will consider experience conducting fieldwork, research, analysis, and reporting in other parts of the United States.
  • Experience with projects for State of Texas agencies.
  • Supervisory experience leading field projects through completion of reporting.
  • Experience with GPS technologies and other digital data collection methods.
  • Understanding of reporting standards; a writing sample may be requested for review.
  • Specific research areas and/or skills are preferred, but not limited to: remote sensing techniques, faunal analysis, lithic technology, prehistoric ceramics, historic archaeology, human osteology, or geomorphology.

Successful candidates must also be able to:

  • travel overnight as project schedules dictate (could be at least 50 percent over a typical year).
  • walk up to 10 miles a day.
  • dig shovel tests to depths of up to one meter.
  • lift 50 pounds.
  • work outdoors in potentially adverse weather conditions.
  • work with minimal supervision at times.
  • manage time efficiently.
  • work in a collaborative environment.
  •  

Job responsibilities will include developing and planning field projects, leading field crews on survey, testing, and data recovery investigations in consultation with AmaTerra senior archaeology staff, report writing, analysis, client coordination, and working with all staff in AmaTerra Offices. Experience with project scoping, budget development, and management is preferred.
