Archaeologist II Section 106 Reviewer: The Louisiana Division of Archaeology

The Louisiana Division of Archaeology is seeking applicants for an Archaeologist II Section 106 Reviewer / Outreach position in our Baton Rouge, Louisiana, office.  The position description and required skills and knowledge are outlined below.  This is a full-time civil service position with health insurance; vacation and sick leave; and retirement. Salary range is $39,166 to $68,640 with specific salary dependent on qualifications and experience. 

This position will concentrate on logging and tracking Section 106 correspondence and conducting project reviews at the beginning.  As an online submission system is implemented over the next 6 months, the position will transition to 50% Section 106 project reviews and 50% outreach efforts focused on site visits and site/cemetery/collection documentation.

 M.A. in anthropology, archaeology, or closely related field is required.  Applicants must meet the Secretary of Interior’s qualifications ( ).  Please provide a resume and cover letter. In addition, please provide a detailed statement outlining your GIS experience and capabilities, particularly with ESRI ArcView 10.4 or higher version, or equivalent system.

The primary responsibilities of this position are:

    • Managing the Section 106 online submission system and ensuring all documents are properly filed;
    • Reviewing projects for their impact on known archaeological sites and recommending survey when appropriate;
    • Working with the Section 106 Manager to ensure all projects are reviewed and all documents integrated into the electronic system;
    • Responding to public requests to document archaeological sites and cemeteries.  This will also include documenting collections and identifying artifacts for landowners/collectors;
    • Help develop, coordinate, and implement Division Outreach activities.

Required skills and abilities:

    • Familiarity with archaeological field methods;
    • Familiarity with the Section 106 process; 
    • Knowledge of ArcView 10.4 or higher version of GIS software (ESRI product preferred);
    • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software, including Word, Excel, and Access;
    • Ability to communicate clearly and accurately via phone, email, letter, and in person about the Section 106 process;
    • Ability to communicate via email, phone, and in person with the general public, students, collectors, and landowners about archaeology and Louisiana’s cultural history.

Desired skills and abilities:

  • Archaeological field experience, including survey and excavation;
  • Experience in the Section 106 review process;
  • Experience in public outreach and working with landowners and collectors;
  • Archaeological experience in the Lower Mississippi Valley region and knowledge of its culture history.
