Growing Office in New Mexico Seeking Additional Staff


Arcaeological PI/PD and FS/CC–New Mexico

Established Cultural Resource Management firm headquartered in Bismarck, North Dakota, is currently seeking to fill one or more position(s) to assist our current staff members in the Artesia, NM field office with the incoming work. Applicants need to be permitted with or able to be permitted with the Southeast New Mexico Region of the BLM as well as the New Mexico SHPO/HPD and CPRC to work on New Mexico State Lands. Fieldwork will be conducted primarily throughout New Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas. Depending on the candidate and the role they would serve at BCA the position is flexible as to type of position (e.g., seasonal, project specific, or (upon the completion of a successful probationary period) full-time with benefits) and location.


All interested applicants must meet the minimum requirements and physical requirements detailed below and should come prepared with or have the ability to possess the attributes of a successful candidate:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Higher Level education in Archaeology/Anthropology
  • 3 years of relevant work experience to include at least 1 year in supervisory roles
  • Previous field experience in New Mexico (meeting State and Federal FS/CC and/or PI/PD permitting standards)
  • Proper knowledge and use of NRHP guidance on site evaluations
  • If needed, ability to work in the field for up to 75% of the time (with the potential for overnight stays as the type of project(s) demands)
  • Ability to walk long distances in extreme weather through rugged terrain in extreme weather
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record
  • Pass a Pre-employment and Random Non-DOT drug test as well as annual drug tests

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Trimble GPS or similar hardware
  • Faunal and/or Lithic analysis experience
  • Lab and/or artifact curation experience
  • Ability to be permitted in the BLM’s SW Texas region


  • Perform and supervise Phase I, II, and III archaeological fieldwork and report on results
  • Evaluation of sites by applying NRHP guidance as well as any specific New Mexico State and/or Federal guidance
  • Direct and lead crew member(s) and if not, the lead be able to serve as a positive and effective team member
  • Take initiative and responsibility for the projects being overseen (even if only serving as a regular team member)
  • Apply problem solving skills in order to optimize project completion (even if only serving as a regular team member)
  • Use professional judgement, thoughtfulness, and past experience to all projects and various working scenarios
  • Direct data management and reporting for simultaneous projects under strict deadlines
  • Work closely with all BCA staff regarding project work, scheduling, and data exchange
  • Maintain clear and detailed field notes and field forms
  • Maintain company practices and standards for work and communication
  • Attentive to details with an ability to manage multiple tasks and/or multi-task
  • Undertakes responsibility for the project (including but not limited to: asking the necessary questions, booking hotel rooms, overseeing and managing crew members, communicating with office on project status and any concerns, etc…)
  • Successfully complete small and large-scale reports (and all appropriate forms such as: NIAF, LA, HCPI, and all applicable field forms)


Physical Requirements:

  • Regularly sit and/or drive for hours at a time
  • Walking/Surveying for hours at a time in extreme weather and through rugged terrain (approximately 30 acres per day)
  • Utilizing vision to look for objects on the ground as well as the observation of objects at both long and short distances
  • Able to utilize hands to drive, hold GPS, camera, and other necessary field equipment and as needed to safely work with shovels, augers, trowels, screens
  • Able to traverse across uneven and rough terrain under various weather conditions (including but not limited to: extreme heat, cold, wind, and/or rain)
  • Ability to bend-over, squat/stoop down to inspect items and as needed to work on any testing projects
